No. 25 Irish To Hit The Road For The Weekend

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 25 Irish men’s tennis team is set to face Marquette at 11:00 a.m. (ET), followed by Michigan State at 6:00 p.m. (ET) at the Michigan State Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich.

IRISH NOTES:

The Irish are currently 4-3 in the season, most recently dropping to No. 14 Duke, 5-2. The Irish rebounded, defeating Toledo, 7-0 and No. 39 Wisconsin, 6-1. The Irish moved up one spot to No. 25 after the Feb. 8 ITA/Campbell’s Men’s National Team Rankings. Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College) and Spencer Talmadge (Hillsborough, Calif./Junipero Serra) grabbed another win at Wisconsin, making their record 5-1 at second doubles.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES

The Golden Eagles enter the weekend with a 4-1 record, defeating IUPUI, Chicago State, Northern Illinois and University of Illinois-Chicago, falling to (then) 27th-ranked Minnesota. At the No. 1 singles position, Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley carries a 4-1 dual record, while freshman Dan Mamalat has a 5-0 record between No. 2 and No. 3 singles. At the ITA Midwest Regional, Notre Dame’s Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) defeated Marquette’s senior Jose Manuel Munoz, 6-1, 6-0. Munoz currently has a 3-1 dual singles record.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

The Spartans enter the weekend with an 8-0 record. Most recently, defeating Toledo, 6-1 and downing the (then) 21st-ranked Wake Forest, 6-1, which moved them to No. 56 in the ITA/Campbell’s rankings. Sophomore Denis Bogatov, who has been competing at the No. 1 position and currently carries a 5-0 record, while at the No. 2 position, junior Ron Hulewicz also has a 5-0 record at singles, as well as a 3-0 doubles record. The senior trio of John Stratton, Jason Norville and Clark Richardson have a combined record of 13-2 in singles.
