No. 21 Irish Down USTA Junior National Team

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Led by an early point in doubles, the 21st-ranked University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team earned a 5-2 exhibition victory over the USTA Junior National Team at the Everett Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Fla. Senior Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) won his fourth-straight singles match as he defeated Hunter Harrington in a three-set match (6-1, 1-6, 6-2). The four-match winning streak is Stahl’s second this season.

The Irish secured the doubles point for an early lead as Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College) and Spencer Talmadge (Hillsborough, Calif./Junipero Serra) downed Luca Corintelli and Nikko Madregallego 8-4 at first doubles. The Irish duo has compiled a 2-2 record at first doubles this season.

Seniors Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and David Anderson (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) were downed by Hunter Harrington and Ronnie Schnyder, 8-5 at second doubles.

Senior-captain Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan) and freshman Greg Andrews (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) picked up a win at third doubles. The pair handled Joseph DiGiulio and Spencer Papa 8-3.

At the top of the lineup, Stahl defeated Harrington 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 in his first appearance this season at the No. 1 spot.

At second singles, Andrews downed Papa 4-6, 7-6, 10-8. The freshman carries a 7-7 singles record so far this season and has consistently played at the No. 4 position with the exception of two matches at No. 3.

Fitzgerald fell to Madregallego at third singles by a score of 5-7, 6-4, 10-2.

Blas Moros (Boca Raton, Fla./Pine Crest) gave a hometown showing as the sophomore handled Ronnie Schnyder in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 position.

Rounding out the Irish victories, Anderson improved his perfect record this dual season to 6-0. The senior defeated Corintelli 6-4, 7-5.

At sixth singles Davis faced DiGiulio, but the left hander was unable to come away with a win as he dropped a 7-6, 6-3 decision.

Notre Dame has a quick turnaround as the team will battle 14th-ranked Kentucky Thursday at 2:00 p.m. (ET) at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Ky.
