No. 20 Women's Tennis Shuts Out Virginia Teach

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 20th-ranked University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team won its third straight match Sunday morning, blanking #75 Virginia Tech 7-0 in the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Irish won the doubles point and did not drop a set in taking all six singles matches. Notre Dame improved to 7-5, while Virginia Tech fell to 6-4. The Irish will return to action next weekend, concluding a six-match homestand by taking on 41st-ranked Wisconsin Friday at 4:00 p.m. and #35 Ohio State Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Notre Dame won the top two matches to gain the doubles point. Seniors Becky Varnum (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Lindsey Green (El Cajon, Calif.), the 30th-ranked doubles team in the nation, gained an 8-4 victory at No. 1, while senior Nina Vaughan (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and junior Katie Cunha (Mercer Island, Wash.) won 8-6 at No.2. Ashleigh Sarver and Meredith Vincent registered an 8-1 win at No. 3 — the only Hokie victory of the day.

The Irish took all six singles matches in straight sets. Varnum, ranked 73rd in singles, finished first with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1. Vaughan gave Notre Dame a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2, setting up Green’s clinching victory at No. 3 — a 6-2, 6-4 triumph. After the outcome was determined, 127th-ranked sophomore Alicia Salas (Engelwood, Colo.) won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4, Cunha notched a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5 and freshman Sarah Jane Connelly (Oklahoma City, Okla.) completed the sweep, winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
