CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team claimed six gold medal finishes Friday on its way to a 131-112 dual victory over Cleveland State inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
The win moved the No. 20 Fighting Irish to 6-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Notre Dame began that campaign 8-0, ultimately finishing with an 11-3 dual meet record.
Senior Bill Bass was a double winner in individual competition, swimming the 200 IM in 1:50.59 to earn the race win. Bass then navigated the 100 fly with a time of 50.58 to edge teammate John Williamson for the top finish. Bass also was third in the pool for the victorious 200 medley relay team that posted a winning clip of 1:32.44.
Freshman Michael Hudspith was the top swimmer in the 200 free, beating out teammate Kevin Hughes for the event gold with a time of 1:40.29. Hughes responded in the 500 free, clocking a 4:33.04 to best Cleveland State’s Mark De Swardt by more than one second (4:34.74).
Junior Colin Babcock rounded out the race winners for Notre Dame, logging a 56.11 to pace the field in the 100 breast.
Notre Dame returns to the pool Jan. 25-26 when it welcomes Harvard and Towson to the Rolfs Aquatic Center for the annual Shamrock Invitational.
Event-By-Event Results:
200 Medley Relay: The Notre Dame entry of Bogac Ayhan, Christopher Johnson, Bass and Kevin Overholt outswam the field with a time of 1:32.44. The Fighting Irish quartet of Bertie Nel, Mason Weber, Babcock and Broderick Kelley finished in third place (1:36.88).
1650 Free: Brennan Jacobsen was the top Notre Dame finisher, touching in at 16:06 .02 to claim runner-up honors behind Cleveland State’s De Swardt (15:45.10). Patrick Murphy (16:24.17) and Michael Scheid (17:02.25) finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
200 Free: Hughes earned second place behind Hudspith with a time of 1:40.98. Williamson (1:45.53) and Andrew Jensen (1:53.18) rounded out the Fighting Irish entries in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
50 Free: Babcock was less than one second behind the race winner Bass, touching the wall in 1:51.39. Nel secured the top-three finishers for Notre Dame with a time of 1:56.32.
100 Fly: Williamson posted a time of 51.25 in his runner-up finish behind Bass. Kelley was the third Fighting Irish swimmer in the top five, clocking in at 51.66.
100 Free: Overholt earned second place with a time of 46.94. Hudspith touched in at 47.15 to claim fourth place. 100 Back: Ayhan (52.07) and Nel (52.27) paced Notre Dame with second and third place times. Scheid logged a 54.88 for fifth place.
500 Free: Jacobsen’s third-place time of 4:43.71 gave the Fighting Irish two swimmers in the event’s top three. 100 Breast: Johnson touched in behind Babcock (56.96) to claim second place. Weber logged a time of 59.57 to finish in fourth.
200 Free Relay: The Notre Dame `A’ entry of Williamson, Ayhan, Hudspith and Hughes finished second with a time of 1:27.73. Murphy, Jacobsen, Tylor Gauger and Scheid took home fourth place after clocking in at 1:32.19.
1-Meter Dive: Ryan Koter scored 307.04 points to finish second to Cleveland State’s Danny Roberts (326.03). Ted Wagner was the third-place finisher after scoring 288.82 points, while John Andrade came in fifth (273.44).
3-Meter Dive: Andrade earned runner-up honors with a score of 284.55 points. Wagner (278.25) and Koter (266.78) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.
