March 19, 2009

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The second-ranked Irish women’s tennis team returns home Friday to host No. 29 Vanderbilt at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

The match is set to get underway at 2:00 p.m.

Notre Dame climbed two spots to No. 2 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings after winning two of its three matches last week.

The Irish defeated South Florida, 5-2, then upset then-No. 3 Duke, 5-2, in Orlando, Fla. Notre Dame ended their three-match road swing with a 4-3 setback to No. 7 Georgia Tech.

The Irish are now 14-2 on the season.

Vanderbilt enters the match at 5-3 overall and 1-2 in SEC play after defeating No. 39 Princeton, 5-2, on Wednesday.

The Commodores are led by junior Catherine Newman, the 61st-ranked singles player and a two-time All-SEC selection.
