NOTRE DAME, Ind.- The No. 19 Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team (4-0) had a solid first day at the Michigan Invitational, against a pair of higher ranked opponents, on Friday, Jan. 12. The women scored 376 points to place second behind No. 13 Indiana’s 405 points and ahead of No. 10 Michigan’s 331 points and Illinois’ 128 points.

Senior Katie Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) picked up two more event wins, as she won the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.31) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.78). The 500-yard freestyle time was a career best for Carroll. Further, both the senior’s times reached the NCAA `B’ standards. Carroll has now won 12 individual events this season.

Junior Caroline Johnson (Springfield, Mo./Glendale) also had steady first day, as she placed third in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 23.57. Caroline Johnson was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team, along with Carroll, Christa Riggins (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) and Rebecca Grove (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) that placed third in the event in a school season-best time of 1:34.19.

The Irish trio of Caroline Johnson, Carroll and Riggins continued their busy meet by teaming up with senior Julia Quinn (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) to place second in the 400-yard medley relay in their time of 3:47.78.

For the Irish divers, freshman Natalie Stitt (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) finished fourth in the three-meter diving competition with 270.25 points.

The Fighting Irish women continue competing in the Michigan Invitational with the second day set to start at 9 a.m. and the evening session kicking off at 4 p.m.
