NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team braved the elements for a top 20 matchup with Michigan on Sunday, but the Irish lost for the first time this season in a 5-2 decision at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
The 19th-ranked Irish scored an upset in the doubles portion of the afternoon, as No. 16 Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson defeated No. 10 Emina Bektas and Alex Najarian on Court 1 to clinch the doubles point, 6-4. Mary Closs and Jane Fennelly also snagged a win at No. 3, dropping Mira Ruder-Hook and Annie Wierda, 6-3. Allison Miller and Julie Vrabel fell at No. 2 doubles to No. 35 Ronit Yurovsky and Sarah Lee, 3-6.
Michigan rebounded in singles, taking five of six matches to seal the win. Fennelly earned her third singles win of the season at No. 6 singles, notching a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kristen Dodge to remain undefeated. At No. 3 singles, Vrabel took 38th-ranked Lee to three sets, but fell 1-6, 6-2, 3-6, while Closs lost a three-set match to Najarian, 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, at No. 4 singles.
At the No. 1 slot, Gleason fell to No. 18 Bektas after taking the first set to a tiebreaker, but Bektas ran away in the second for a 7-6, 6-1, win. Robinson dropped a 2-6, 3-6 decision to No. 23 Yurovsky, and Miller lost to Ruder-Hook, 5-7, 3-6.
