No. 17 Women's Lacrosse Defeats Stanford 10-5

Stanford, Calif. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team, behind senior Alissa Moser’s four goals and junior Danielle Shearer’s hat trick, defeated Stanford10-5 today at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, Calif. Notre Dame, who is ranked #17 in the nation, improves to 2-0 on the season, while Stanford falls to 3-3.

Notre Dame jumped out to an early 1-0 lead only 1:54 into the first half as Shearer scored her first of three goals on the day. The junior tallied her second goal of the game just over three minutes later at 24:48 of the half, giving the Irish a 2-0 lead. Stanford cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Ali Salatti at 19:26, but Notre Dame answered right back as Moser recorded her first goal of the afternoon at 18:54, making the score 3-2. Stanford cut the lead against to one goal as Abbi Hills scored at15:29, but that would be as close as the Cardinal would get in the contest.

Shearer completed her hat trick with a goal at 9:49 of the first half, giving the Irish a 4-2 lead. Notre Dame senior Natalie Loftus closed out the first half scoring with 41 seconds remaining in the half, extending the Irish lead to 5-2 heading into the lockerroom.

Stanford came out strong in the second half, immediately cutting the lead to 5-3 after a Jess Scott’s goal at 26:59. Notre Dame then took control of the game, scoring five unanswered goals, extending its lead to 10-3. Moser posted her second goal of the game at 21:58, before scoring goal number three at 11:39. Irish sophomore Kate Marotta scored her second goal of her season with 9:37 remaining in the game. Sophomore Kassen Delano extended the Irish lead to 9-3 with her second goal of the year, before Moser concluded the Irish scoring with her fourth goal of the game and fifth of the season at 7:30. The Cardinal closed out the game with Scott’s second goal of the game with six minutes remaining and Liz Britt’s tally at 4:04.

Irish goalkeeper Jen White allowed only five goals and made 11 saves in a winning effort, while Stanford’s Virginia Solomon made 12 saves on the day.

Notre Dame returns to action on Thursday, March 14, when it travels to Winter Park, Fla., to play George Mason. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
