No. 17 Notre Dame Tops Louisville 147-94 In Dual-Meet Action

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the final dual meet of the 2006-07 season, the 17th-ranked Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team captured a 147-94 victory over BIG EAST rival Louisville on Saturday afternoon in the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The Fighting Irish won seven of the 13 events to move their record to 11-3 on the campaign.

Sophomore Jeff Wood (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport/Indiana) and freshman Andrew Hoffman (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) helped the Irish to the victory as they captured wins in the 200-yard back (1:51.04) and the 200-yard free (1:41.58), respectively, along with being a part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay unit (3:04.81). Joining them on the relay were freshman John Lytle (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) and senior co-captain Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western).

Junior diver Steven Crowe (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) had a personal-best day off of the three-meter board as he registered 352.28 points to take the win. Fellow diver Michael Bulfin (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) won his ninth event of the season by taking the one-meter competition with a point total of 333.53.

Also winning for the Irish were freshman Andrew Deters (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) in the 1,000-yard free in a team season-best time of 9:25.35. Senior Brian Freeman (Sanger, Calif./Immanuel) won the 500 free in 4:40.72.

The Irish will return to the pool when they look to defend their 2005 and 2006 BIG EAST titles. The 2007 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships will take place Feb. 14-17 in the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

MEET RECAP:

400-Yard Medley Relay: Louisville (Carlos Van Issochot, Vali Preda, Adam Madarassy, Chris Lindauer) took first in a time of 3:20.91. The Irish took second with Jeff Wood, Sam Pendergast, Tim Kegelman and John Lytle posting a time of 3:23.49. The Notre Dame quartet of Alan Carter, Eric Swenson, David Cavadini and Bill Bauman placed third in 3:29.07.

1,000-Yard Free: Freshman Andrew Deters recorded Notre Dame’s first win of the day as he swam a team season-best time of 9:25.35. The Irish would flex their distance freestyle muscle by taking the next three spots as well. Jay Vanden Berg placed second in 9:36.23, while Ted Brown was third in 9:38.71 and Brian Freeman was fourth in 9:39.24.

200-Yard Free: Andrew Hoffman made it two wins in a row for the Irish as he touched the wall in 1:41.58. He was followed closely by his teammates Louis Cavadini and MacKenzie LeBlanc. Cavadini was second in 1:42.91 and LeBlanc took third in 1:43.75. Rob Seery was fifth for the Irish in 1:46.10.

50-Yard Free: Louisville’s Chris Lindauer placed first in 21.25. John Lytle finished second for the Irish in 21.26, while his teammate Patrick Lloyd was third in 21.62. David Anderson was fifth for Notre Dame in 21.88.

200-Yard IM: The Cardinals took the top two spots as Vali Preda was first in 1:54.97 and Luke Wakefield was second in 1:56.86. Notre Dame occupied the next three spots with Justin Barber going 1:58.32, Tim Kegelman finishing in 1:58.44 and Alan Carter placing fifth in 1:58.87.

1-Meter Diving: Michael Bulfin won for the Irish with a point total of 333.53. Sam Stoner (287.48), Steven Crowe (280.73) and Chris Kane (243.38) placed third through fifth, respectively.

200-Yard Fly: Refal Kuchta from Louisville won with a time of 1:49.88. David Cavadini placed second for Notre Dame as he touched the wall in 1:53.11. Ted Brown was fourth in 1:53.64 and his Fighting Irish teammate Andrew Deters was fifth in 1:53.66.

100-Yard Free: Louisville won its second straight event as Carlos Van Issochot clocked a time of 45.93. Notre Dame held strong by taking the next three spots as Louis Cavadini went 46.52 to place second, Patrick Lloyd posted a time of 47.44, which was good for third place and Danny Lutkus was fourth in 47.96.

200-Yard Back: Notre Dame got back on the winning track as Jeff Wood took the victory in a time of 1:51.04. Alan Carter was fourth for the Irish in 1:56.94 and Rob Seery was fifth for Notre Dame in 1:57.36.

500-Yard Free: The Fighting Irish dominated by sweeping the top-four spots. Brian Freeman claimed the victory in 4:40.72, while Andrew Hoffman was second with a mark of 4:41.80. Chris Zeches placed third in 4:43.10 and Justin Barber was fourth in a time of 4:44.33.

3-Meter Diving: Irish junior Steven Crowe posted a career-best point total of 352.28 to place first. Michael Bulfin would finish second for Notre Dame in 337.58, while Sam Stoner and Scott Coyle placed fourth and fifth with respective totals of 270.83 and 256.13.

200-Yard Breast: Vali Preda won his second event of the day for the Cardinals as he posted a time of 2:02.99. Notre Dame took the next three spots, with Daniel Rave finishing second in 2:04.63, while Jay Vanden Berg was third in 2:08.47 and Tyler Angelo was fourth in 2:08.49.

400-Yard Free Relay: The Notre Dame team of John Lytle, Andrew Hoffman, Jeff Wood and Ted Brown took the Irish’s seventh event of the afternoon by recording a time of 3:04.81. The Fighting Irish also placed third with Patrick Lloyd, David Anderson, Bill Bauman and Rob Seery going 3:10.26.
