Senior Ted Brown won the 500-yard free during the first session of the Shamrock Invitational on Friday evening.

No. 17 Notre Dame To Host A Pair Of Meets This Weekend

Nov. 10, 2006

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 17 Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team will welcome Michigan State and Pittsburgh into the Rolfs Aquatic Center this weekend. The Irish and Spartans are set to square off on Friday (Nov. 10) at 4:30 p.m. (ET), while Notre Dame and Pittsburgh will meet on Saturday at noon. Notre Dame is off to a 2-0 start this season in dual meet action with wins over Texas A&M and No. 18 Purdue.

Last season, the Irish nipped Michigan State 122.5-120.5 in East Lansing, Mich. Ted Brown led Notre Dame with victories in the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events. Louis Cavadini also collected a win in the 50-yard free, while Michael Bulfin won the one-meter diving competition and Sam Stoner took first off of the three-meter board.

Notre Dame is 3-2 all-time against Michigan State, including a 2-0 mark at home. The Irish downed the Spartans 213-87 during their last visit to the Rolfs Aquatic Center in 2004.

The Fighting Irish also used a dramatic effort to top Pittsburgh, 122-121, during the 2005-06 season in Pittsburgh. That marked the second straight year in which the Irish came out victorious against the Panthers as a result of the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Cavadini, Alan Carter, Nick Fanslau and Tim Kegelman teamed up to post the victory and ensure a team win.

In 2004, Notre Dame won the final relay to produce a 155-145 win against their BIG EAST Conference rival. This will be the 10th dual meet between Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, with the Panthers holding a 7-2 advantage in the series. Notre Dame’s win over Pittsburgh in 2004 marked the first win ever for the Irish over a ranked opponent. The Panthers were No. 17 at the time.

Notre Dame began the 2006-07 season with a 169-129 victory at Texas A&M on Oct. 28. The Irish opened the home portion of their slate last Friday (Nov. 3) with a 156-144 triumph over No. 18 Purdue. The Irish won nine of 16 events against Purdue, with Brown (200 IM, 200 free) and Jay Vanden Berg (500 free, 1,000 free) each claiming two victories apiece. That was the first win against the Boilermakers in the last 19 tries for the Fighting Irish.

The Irish will not return to the pool until the Ohio State Invitational, which takes place Dec. 1-3 in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
