No. 17 Notre Dame To Conclude Dual-Meet Season This Saturday At Louisville

Feb. 2, 2007

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 17 Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team will conclude the 2006-07 dual-meet schedule against BIG EAST foe Louisville this Saturday (Feb. 3) in the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The meet is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. (ET). The Irish carry a 10-3 dual-meet record into this weekend’s action. This marks the third straight season in which Notre Dame has posted at least 10 wins.

Last weekend, the Fighting Irish hosted the Shamrock Dual Meet Invitational and went 2-2. Notre Dame topped Connecticut (284-86) and Oakland (230-139) and dropped decisions to West Virginia (228-142) and Penn State (221.5-147.5).

Sophomore diver Michael Bulfin (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) notched wins off both the one-meter and three-meter boards during the Shamrock Invitational. His point total of 339.40 in the one-meter competition established a new school record, eclipsing the old mark of 339.29 from Andy Maggio during the 2001-02 season. Bulfin took the three-meter with a score of 378.30, which was 5.5 points shy of the program record.

Also registering a victory for the Irish was senior Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western) in the 500-yard freestyle. He touched the wall in 4:31.55 to spearhead an Irish sweep of the top four spots. Sophomore Jeff Wood (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport/Indiana) placed second in 4:34.12, followed by Jay Vanden Berg (Holland, Mich./Southfield Christian School) in 4:34.14 and Rob Seery (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) in fourth with a mark of 4:34.31.

Brown leads the Irish with 10 individual wins this season, while Bulfin has recorded eight victories.

Notre Dame owns a 3-0 dual-meet mark all-time against Louisville, with all of the meetings occurring over the past three seasons. The Irish topped the Cardinals 277-91 last season in the Shamrock Invitational in the Rolfs Aquatic Center. In their last trip to Louisville, the Irish left with a 242-117 victory during the 2004-05 campaign.

After this weekend, the Irish will return to the pool when they look to defend their 2005 and 2006 BIG EAST titles. The 2007 BIG EAST Championship will take place Feb. 14-17 in the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
