Nov. 2, 2006

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A battle of two top 20 teams will take place in Notre Dame’s Rolfs Aquatic Center on Friday evening when No. 17 Notre Dame meets No. 18 Purdue in men’s swimming and diving action. The meet is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. (ET). The Irish’s ranking in the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll is the highest mark ever in program history. The 20th-ranked Fighting Irish women will also meet the Boilermakers on Friday evening.

Notre Dame opened the 2006-07 dual meet season with a 169-129 win last Saturday at Texas A&M. The Irish won nine of 16 events and took three of the five scoring spots in 12 of 14 non-relay events.

Sophomores Jeff Wood (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Sam Pendergast (Melbourne, Australia) both collected two wins apiece in their Fighting Irish dual meet debuts. Wood, a transfer from Indiana, won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, while Pendergast, who did not compete during his freshman season, notched victories in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Wood and Pendergast were also part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team for the Irish. Joining them on the winning relay quartet were seniors Tim Kegelman (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) and Louis Cavadini (South Bend, Ind./Riley). Kegelman added to his victory total by winning the 100-yard butterfly.

Also claiming titles for the Irish were junior Jay Vanden Berg (Holland, Mich./Southfield Christian School) in the 1,000-yard free, senior Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western) in the 200-yard free and freshman John Lytle (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) in the 100 free.

Last season, the 15th-ranked Boilermakers topped No. 19 Notre Dame 182-118 in West Lafayette, Ind. The Fighting Irish claimed five victories, including two by Vanden Berg in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard free. Other winners for the Irish were Brown, Cavadini and Kegelman in the 200-yard free, 50-yard free and the 100-yard butterfly, respectively.

The Irish will return to the pool on Friday, Nov. 10 when they host Michigan State followed by a date against Pittsburgh on Saturday, Nov. 11, which will also be held in the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
