Washington, D.C. —The 17th-ranked Notre Dame men’s soccer team couldn’t overcome two first-half goals by Georgetown as the Irish dropped a 2-1 decision on the road. Coach Mike Berticelli’s squad is just 1-2-2 now in its last five outings.
The win drops the Irish to 4-2-3 on the season and 2-2-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Hoyas improve to 8-2 and 2-2 overall.
Junior midfielder Jason Partenza scored two first half goals, including the game-wining goal with just a second left in the first half. Partenza’s first score came at the 15:0 mark when he raced into the penalty area and one-timed a cross from Kyle Rakow into the goal off the bottom of the crossbar. Mert Incekara also on the goal.
Partenza goal one second before the half came when he received a pass from Eric Kvello and redirected the ball into the right corner of the goal. Kevin Shaw also was credited with the assist.
Notre Dame scored at the 71:42 mark when junior forward Ryan Cox (Broadview Hts, Ohio) dribbled past the GU defenders into the penalty area and beat Hoya goalkeeper Tyler Purtill to the corner.
Purtill made seven saves in goal, while Notre Dame goalkeeper Greg Velho (Longwood, Fla.) came up with two stops. Georgetown outshot Notre Dame 15-14, but the Irish had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Notre Dame returns to action on Tuesday, October 6 when the Irish host IUPUI at 7:30 p.m. in the first of three consecutive non-league contests.
