Box Score | Highlights

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — No. 15 Notre Dame used a three-goal second period to erase a 1-0 deficit and the Fighting Irish would go on to post a 5-1 win over Wisconsin on Friday night at Compton Family Ice Arena (4,335).

The win marked Notre Dame’s (7-3-0, 1-2-0-0-0-0 B1G) first Big Ten victory of the season.

Spencer Stastney posted his first career three-assist game, while Max Ellis added to his team-leading goal total, notching his sixth and seventh of the season. Landon Slaggert tallied a goal and an assist on the night, while Ryder Rolston and Solag Bakich each earned two assists in the victory.

In net, Matthew Galajda made 24 saves to earn the victory, his sixth of the season and 66th of his career. Jared Moe finished with 43 saves for Wisconsin (4-7-0, 2-3-0-1-0-0 B1G) as Notre Dame outshot the Badgers 48-25.

The Fighting Irish power play went 2-for-5 on the night, while Wisconsin was 1-for-3.

How It Happened

The Badgers capitalized early on a Roman Ahcan power-play goal when he picked up a clearing attempt in the faceoff circle and fired a shot high through a screen at 2:35 of the first period.

Notre Dame generated several chances as the first period wore on, including a Landon Slaggert breakaway attempt at 5:06 setup by a Ryder Rolston pass, but Wisconsin’s Jared Moe made the save.

With a power-play chance expiring, Chase Blackmun was setup at the back post early in the second period, but Moe made a stick save to keep Wisconsin in front 1-0.

Landon Slaggert then got the Irish on the board at 2:47 of the second when he took a Rolston pass at the blue line and got a shot off from in close. With Rolston also crashing the net, the puck caromed off a Badger defenseman and past Moe. The second assist went to Spencer Stastney, who got the play started from deep in his own end.

Just 2:04 later, Jesse Lansdell tipped in a Stastney shot-pass in the slot, with Solag Bakich providing the traffic in front. Zach Plucinski also had an assist on the goal, which was Lansdell’s second of the season.

Trevor Janicke made it a 3-1 lead with a power-play goal scored at 15:05 of the second. Stationed just outside the crease, Janicke took a Landon Slaggert pass in front and moved the puck to his forehand and flipped it high past Moe for his fifth goal of the season, with the other assist going to Stastney.

Max Ellis notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season when he put back a rebound in front following a Ryder Rolston one timer while the Irish were on the power play. The goal, scored at 10:39 of the third, was also assisted by Bakich.

Ellis would add to that lead, burying his seventh of the season on a shorthanded, empty-netter from deep in his own end for the final 5-1 scoreline. Bakich won the faceoff and Adam Karashik slid it to an open Ellis for the score.
