No. 14 Irish Claim Eight Race Titles At Michigan State

LANSING, Mich. – The University of Notre Dame rowing team captured eight victories Saturday in a four-team competition with Iowa, Michigan and Michigan State on the Grand River. The Irish first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four and novice eight were each double winners on the day.

No. 14 Notre Dame opened the morning with a win in the novice eight. The Irish ‘A’ crew of coxswain Alex Techar, Maddie Tournat, Sarah Kappers, Sarah Russel, Katie Skorcz, Tylah Gantt, Ellen Gleadow, Sarah Claeys and Emily Horton posted a time of 7:26.00 to win by 5.10 over Iowa (7:31.10). Notre Dame’s ‘B’ entry of Jill Ryan, Amanda Sosnowski, Carson Canonie, Lucy Hewitt, Mairead Dunne, Colleen McLinden, Alexis Olson, Katherine Lumetta and Megan McKeon clocked in at 7:47.90.

The first varsity four launch of coxswain Danni Schneider, Elizabeth Kelley, Stella Willoughby, Kiersten DeHaven and Kelsey Murphy logged a winning time of 8:03.20 against Iowa. The Irish crew finished 15.30 ahead of the Hawkeyes (8:18.50).

Notre Dame’s second varsity eight, consisting of coxswain Christina Dines, Paige Aiello, Teresa Blumenstein, Ingrid Woelfel, Carlee Beckler, Rose Doerfler, Kelsey Haddad, Kelsey Sekanick and Teresa Rubinger outpaced Iowa for the third win of the day. The Irish crew recorded a 7:03.70 split to down the Hawkeyes (7:10.85).

The first varsity eight crew of coxswain Abby Meyers, Joanna Poinsatte, Stephanie O’Neill, Joanna Mulvey, Courtney Gaberino, Erin Boxberger, Ailish Sheehan, Anna Kottkamp and Molly Bruggeman captured the second-fastest overall time of the day to cap the morning session. The Notre Dame (6:55.10) launch bested Iowa (7:19.70) in a two-team race.

The Irish first novice eight completed its Saturday sweep in the third race of the afternoon, outpacing Michigan State in a heads-up contest. Notre Dame’s time of 7:44.90 cleared the Spartan effort of 7:50.30.

In the ninth race of the second session, the Notre Dame first varsity four launch picked up its second victory of the day in a two-boat race with Michigan State. The Irish (8:14.80) claimed the race win by 7.50 over the Spartans (8:21.85).

Notre Dame picked up its seventh win in the afternoon’s second varsity eight tilt (7:24.20), downing Michigan State (7:30.55). The Irish closed the competition with a victory in the first varsity eight. The Notre Dame launch posted a time of 7:03.10 to defeat Michigan State by nearly 20 seconds (7:22.90).

The Irish return to competition against Ohio State and Michigan April 6 in Columbus, Ohio.
