No. 12 Irish One Point Off Lead After First Day of ACC Championships

Irish one point off lead, only team to qualify multiple divers in women’s 1-meter finals

GREENSBORO, N.C. — No. 12 Notre Dame kicked off the ACC Championships in strong fashion Wednesday with diving and women’s relays, placing second overall heading into the rest of the week. The Irish stand just one point off the lead, while ahead of their nearest competition on the other side by 30 points. 

Kelly Straub and Erin Isola placed fourth and ninth in preliminary competition to claim finals slots. Straub ended the day in fourth place with a 291.95, while Isola jumped three spots in finals to place sixth (281.05). Notre Dame was the only squad to qualify two divers for finals in the event. 

On the swimming end, the team of Carly Quast, Coleen Gillilan, Cailey Grunhard and Rachel Wittmer placed sixth in the women’s 200 Medley Relay (1:37.44), and Abbie Dolan, Gillilan, Lauren Heller and Skylar Fore placed fourth in the women’s 800 Free Relay with a 7:07.89.

Thursday sees the continuation of the ACC Championships, with preliminary races beginning at 10 a.m. Races for the 500 Free, 200 IM and 50 Free will take place, in addition to preliminary competition for the women’s 3-meter diving and the men’s 1-meter diving (both preliminary and final competition). 

Finals for the swim events and the women’s 3-meter competition will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday.
