MADISON, Wisc. – The No. 19 Notre Dame women’s tennis team was unable to hold off No. 11 Baylor and dropped its consolation match to the Bears, 5-1, in action from the ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships.

Baylor (3-1), which nearly upended top-ranked and top-seeded Stanford in the opening round, secured the all-important doubles point.

The 50th-ranked duo of Jana Bielikova and Karolina Filipiak picked up the first victory in doubles action. They upended sophomore Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, Kan) and freshman Kristen Rafael (Grand Prairie, Texas), 8-4, at No. 2.

The Irish squared doubles action at one match apiece with a victory at No. 3. The sophomore tandem of Cosmina Ciobanu (Brea, Calif.) and Colleen Rielley (Overland Park, Kan.) battled Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk. The match was not decided until a tie-breaker, which the Irish duo came out on top 9-8 (7-3).

The doubles point would be decided by a matchup between two of the top four tandems in the country. The #4 duo of Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova outlasted the #3 team of senior Brook Buck (Yukon, Okla.) and junior Kelcy Tefft (Enid, Okla.), 9-8 (7-4).

Buck and Tefft, who saw their 13-match winning streak come to an end yesterday, dropped to 16-4 overall and 5-2 in dual matches. Buck and Tefft upended Broosova and Zemenova earlier this season in the finals of the ITA National Indoor Championships.

The Bears pushed their advantage to 2-0 following #15 Zemenova’s 6-0, 6-2 straight-set victory over #64 Buck at No. 1.

Notre Dame drew within a point, 2-1, when Tefft disposed of Ormond in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Tefft now stands 11-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in dual matches – the lone Irish player unbeaten so far this spring.

Baylor clinched the match with victories at No. 5 and No. 2. #47 Jana Bielikova got past #88 Katie Potts 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 and #18 Broosova upended #62 Ciobanu 7-6 (1), 6-0.

With the match already decided, Stanivuk knocked off #88 Rielley 7-6 (2), 6-4 at No. 4.
