NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame fencing team will host the first-ever regular season event at the Castellan Family Fencing Center Saturday, as six teams are set to join the Irish for the annual Notre Dame Duals. The first round of bouts is scheduled to begin approximately at 8 a.m.
The No. 1 Irish women’s team (20-1) won all three of its head-to-head matches during its last organized event at the Duke Fencing Home Meet Feb. 10, downing No. 5 Penn State 20-7, Duke 16-11 and North Carolina 20-7. Notre Dame’s foil squad compiled an impressive 24-3 record during the competition.
On the men’s side, No. 2 Notre Dame enters its home dual contest with a 12-7 record after a 1-2 weekend at Duke Feb. 10. The Irish narrowly fell to No. 8 Duke (12-15) and No. 2 Penn State (11-16) in team matches.
Notre Dame earned a clean 24-0 sweep at last season’s Notre Dame Duals, as both the men’s and women’s teams went a perfect 12-0 inside the Joyce Center Fieldhouse Jan. 28-29, 2012. The Irish women punctuated the event with a day one win over then No. 4 Northwestern 17-10, while the Notre Dame men averaged more than 22 wins per match during its spotless round of competition on the second day the home duals.
