Nineteen Swimmers Head to Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS – The Notre Dame swimming teams will send 19 current or future student-athletes to Indianapolis to compete a combined 57 times at the Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships this week at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. Preliminaries start daily at 9 a.m. with finals beginning nightly at 6 p.m. running from Tuesday through Saturday.

This meet serves as the qualifier for the U.S. team in the pool competition at the 2017 FINA World Championships, which runs from July 23-30 in Budapest, Hungary. Outside of the Olympic Games, the FINA World championships are the sport’s largest international competition.

Results at Phillips 66 Nationals also will qualify individuals for the U.S. rosters for the World University Games and FINA World Junior Championships ââ’¬” set for Aug. 23-28 in Indianapolis ââ’¬” later this summer.

Twelve hours of television coverage from Phillips 66 Nationals will be aired by NBC Sports Group with nightly broadcasts on NBC Sports Network and Universal HD and four hours of coverage on NBC on July 1-2. A webcast of the meet also will be available on usaswimming.org.

Leigh Torbin, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2013. A native of Framingham, Massachusetts, Torbin graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management.
