Nick Martin Named To Rimington Trophy Watch List

May 19, 2015

NOTRE DAME, Indiana – University of Notre Dame graduate C Nick Martin was named to the Rimington Trophy Spring Watch List. The Rimington Trophy is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate center.

Martin (Indianapolis/Bishop Chatard H.S.) has played in 37 games and started 24 contests during his career. He started all 13 games in 2014, but split time between both center and left guard. A 2014 co-captain, Martin will slide back to his natural position of center in 2015 where he’s registered 14 career starts. He started at center in each of the first three games of last season (Rice, Michigan and Purdue), but was forced to move to left guard before the 31-15 victory over Syracuse (Sept. 27) to solidify the left side of the Irish offensive line.

Martin, who was a Rimington Trophy Watch List selection a year ago, started each of the first 11 games of the 2013 campaign at center, but was lost for the season against BYU (Nov. 23) due to a knee injury. He helped an offensive line that allowed just eight sacks and ranked second in the Football Bowl Subdivision in fewest sacks allowed. In fact, no team in the nation allowed fewer sacks and attempted more passes than Notre Dame (eight sacks on 429 pass attempts) in `13.

Since its inception, the Rimington Trophy has raised over $2.6 million for the cystic fibrosis community. The 14-year old award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and has raised over $115 million for CF Research.

Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the Outland Trophy’s only two-time winner as the nation’s finest college interior lineman.
