NOTRE DAME
, Ind. — The 2016-17 National Hockey League season opens on Wednesday night and seven former Notre Dame players have made season-opening rosters.

Former high-scoring Irish forward Vinnie Hinostroza has made the Blackhawks roster out of training camp. Chicago plays St. Louis tonight (Oct. 12) in a game that will be televised on the NBC Sports Network (8:00 p.m. ET). Hinostroza, who played seven games for the Blackhawks last season, could see time at both center and wing this season.

Ian Cole, Bryan Rust and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins will open the 2016-17 season at home on Thursday, Oct. 13 against the Washington Capitals in another game slated for NBCSN (8:00 p.m. ET). Last season, Cole and Rust became the fifth and sixth former Notre Dame hockey players to lift the Stanley Cup.

The other former Fighting Irish players who will open the season in the NHL include Stephen Johns (Dallas), Anders Lee (New York Islanders), Kyle Palmieri (New Jersey) and Riley Sheahan (Detroit).

In addition, 2016 graduate Thomas DiPauli will start the season on Pittsburgh’s injured reserve list after sustaining a lower body injury during training camp.

The 2016-17 hockey season continues this weekend when the No. 5/6 Irish hit the road for a marquee series at No. 4 Minnesota Duluth (Oct. 14-15). Next weekend Notre Dame returns home to the Compton Family Ice Arena for a weekend series versus Penn State (Oct. 21-22).
