BY THE NUMBERS – JOHN MOONEY EDITION

1

Junior John Mooney’s season has been so noteworthy – this edition of ‘By The Numbers’ will be made up of all Mooney factoids as he is one of the leading contenders for the ACC Most Improved Player award.

2

Only two players in the nation have scored 430+ points, grabbed 330+ rebounds, connected on 30+ three-point field goals and have 40+ assists – Mooney and South Dakota State’s Mike Daum.

3

Mooney is on pace to become the third Notre Dame player in the past four seasons to lead the ACC in rebounding in all games (currently at the top of the league with a 11.2 average). Zach Auguste (10.7, 2016) and Bonzie Colson (10.1, 2017) also led the ACC in rebounding. Should Mooney maintain his league-leading status, Notre Dame would become the first ACC program to have a player lead the league in rebounding three out of four seasons (and three out of six since ND joined the ACC) since Tim Duncan did it three straight years for Wake Forest from 1995-97.

6

Mooney’s 20 rebounds against Clemson on Wednesday night was just the sixth 20-rebound performance by a Notre Dame player in Purcell Pavilion (the building opened in 1968). He is the fourth Irish player to reach that mark (Collis Jones did it three times, Adrian Dantley once, Torin Francis once). He is the first Irish player to reach 20 rebounds in a home conference game.

7.3

Increase in rebounds per game for Mooney this season (from 3.9 in 2017-18). He has also increased his scoring 8.8 points (5.6 to 14.4) and has 18 more double-doubles than last season (1).

8

With 335 rebounds this season – Mooney is now eighth on the single-season rebound total list during the Mike Brey era (since 2000-01) and conference (since 1996-97) eras. He is just two rebounds behind Ryan Humphrey (337 in 2001-02) for seventh place.

12.6

Mooney is averaging 12.6 rebounds in conference play this season – a mark that leads all major conference players – and is fourth in the country for all conference players.

13

Mooney has 13 double-doubles in ACC play this season – a mark surpassed by only Tim Duncan’s 15 double-doubles in league play during the 1996-97 season (see page 5 for more).

16

Mooney is the only ACC player to record three games with 16 or more rebounds this season – and all three of those efforts have come in conference play (20 vs. Clemson, 19 at UNC, 16 vs. NC State).

19

Mooney leads the ACC (no other player has more than 12) and is tied for sixth in the country with 19 double-doubles (he is tied for second in double-doubles among major conference players). He also paces the ACC in 10-rebound performances with 21 this season.

20

Should Mooney record one more double-double this season, he would become just the sixth Notre Dame player to reach 20 double-doubles in a single season (see page 8 for more). Current Irish assistant coach Ryan Humphrey is one of five Notre Dame players to reach 20 double-doubles in a season.

30

Not only has Mooney started all 30 games for the Irish this season (the only Irish player to start all 30 games) but he has pulled down 30% of Notre Dame’s total rebounds this season (335 of 1,095).

200

John Mooney is the latest in a long line of juniors to make a significant leap in statistical performance during their third year in the Notre Dame program. He is on pace to become the ninth player to increase his scoring (among other statistics) 200 points or more during their junior season. See page 12 for a full breakdown.

IRISH WRAP UP REGULAR SEASON AT PITTSBURGH

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (13-17, 3-14 ACC) finishes up the 2018-19 regular season schedule at noon on Saturday at Pittsburgh (12-18, 2-15 ACC) on Raycom Sports.

NOTRE DAME vs. PITTSBURGH SERIES HISTORY

  • Notre Dame and Pittsburgh will be meeting for the 65th time on Saturday afternoon, with the Irish leading the all-time series 34-30.
  • After three straight losses in ACC play to the Panthers, Notre Dame has won the previous three meetings and leads the ACC series with the Panther 4-3.
  • Saturday will mark the first head coaching match up between Mike Brey and Jeff Capel, both former Duke assistant coaches. While at Duke from 1987-95, Brey helped recruit Capel to the Blue Devils and coached him during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons.

MOONEY’S 20-REBOUNDS IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

John Mooney’s career-high 20 rebounds against Clemson on March 6, 2019 are tied for the third-most since 1996-97 (when Notre Dame started conference play) and the Mike Brey era. A further breakdown of Mooney’s big game:

  • It is the most since Zach Auguste pulled down 22 rebounds in an overtime victory over Duke in the 2016 ACC tournament (3/10/16).
  • It is the most in a non-overtime game since Luke Harangody had 22 rebounds in a loss to Washington State in the 2008 NCAA tournament (3-22-08).
  • It is the most in a regular-season conference game since Troy Murphy pulled down 20 against Seton Hall on Jan. 8, 2001.
  • It was the most against Clemson since NC State’s J.J. Hickson pulled down 20 on Feb. 16, 2008.
  • It is only the fifth 20-rebound performance at Notre Dame since 1996-97.
  • It is the sixth 20-rebound performance in Purcell Pavilion history – and Mooney is just the fourth Notre Dame player to pull down 20 rebounds in Purcell Pavilion (Collis Jones did it three times, Adrian Dantley once, Torin Francis once).
  • It marked the first time a Notre Dame player has recorded 20 rebounds in a home conference game.
  • Mooney also pulled down 19 rebounds earlier this season at North Carolina (1/15/2019).
  • His 16 defensive rebounds mark the most by a Roy Williams-coached North Carolina team, besting Iowa State’s Jard Homan’s 15 in the 2088 NCAA tournament.
  • His 19 rebounds matched the most by an opposing player in UNC’s Smith Center (done twice in 2011 and 1989).

MOONEY BOASTS NOTABLE ACC-ONLY REBOUND AVERAGE

Entering this weekend’s conference action, John Mooney is averaging 12.6 rebounds per game in ACC play.

If Mooney can keep is rebound per game average above 12.3 – he would be the first ACC player to accomplish that since Tim Duncan from Wake Forest in 1997.
