Irish Stung By Yellow Jackets, 5-2

NOTRE DAME, Indiana — Cameron Corse and Zoe Taylor were victorious for Notre Dame in singles action as the No. 42 Fighting Irish fell to No. 33 Georgia Tech, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Courtney Tennis Center.

How It Happened

The Yellow Jackets quickly took the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 victories at one and two doubles. Kenya Jones and Valeriya Deminova defeated Corse and Zoe Spence at the top of the lineup while Nami Otsuka and Gia Cohen were victorious over Bess Waldram and Brooke Broda. In an abandoned match at three doubles, Taylor and Bojczuk were trailing Victoria Flores and Nadia Gizdova, 4-3.

The top of the lineup again scored quickly for Georgia Tech, with Jones defeated Spence, 6-1, 6-2. Cohen then made it 3-0 thanks to a 6-4, 7-5 win over Waldram, and the team score was clinched at two singles with Otsuka’s 6-1, 7-6 win over Bojczuk.

Corse then secured a 6-4, 6-2 win at court four over Deminova before Flores defeated Broda, 7-5, 6-4. Taylor provided the final margin and point for the Irish, rallying to win in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Match Notes

  • Corse improved to 13-4 in singles this spring.
  • Taylor improved to 9-3 at the six singles spot in 2019.
  • First-year Notre Dame head coach Alison Silverio faced her alma mater for the first time with the Irish. Silverio led the Yellow Jackets to the 2007 NCAA title and was Championship MVP.
