#14 Irish Split Sunday Matches

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — No. 14 Notre Dame split their doubleheader Sunday, defeating Toledo but falling short to No. 30 NC State. 

For the first time in 2019, the Irish hosted an outdoor match at Courtney Tennis Center as they welcomed conference opponent, the NC State Wolfpack. The match went in favor of NC State, leaving the Irish looking to bounce back in their second match of the day.

Heading back inside for the later match, the Irish and Rockets faced off as Notre Dame rallied from their earlier defeat to sweep Toledo, 7-0.

The Irish fell to ACC foe, No. 30 NC State Wolfpack Sunday afternoon in their first outdoor home match of the season. 

As the cool Spring breeze filled the air, the Irish looked for the comeback early on. NC State took the doubles point early with 6-1 and 6-2 set wins on the first and third courts.

The match was officially called after five points, as the Wolfpack defeated the Irish, 5-0 at home. 

vs. Toledo
Looking to get back in the win column, the Irish swept Toledo Sunday evening, downing the Rockets 7-0.

They jumped out to the early lead in doubles, as Grayson Broadus and Matt Gamble finished first with a 6-1 score. Nate Griffin and Daniel Rayl clinched the Irish point as they took the third court by a score of 6-3, giving Notre Dame an edge heading into singles. 

Notre Dame jumped ahead in singles, taking five first sets in singles, including a 6-0 sweep by Griffin. 

Axel Nefve and Matt Gamble finished at virtually the same time with identical scores to put the Irish up by three. Both men recorded 6-2 victories in the first set before holding their opponent to one game in the second set for a 6-1 final. 

The Irish kept rolling with wins from Griffin (6-0, 6-7) who clinched the match point for the team, followed by Paul Gota (6-4, 4-6, 1-0) and Johnathan Small (6-4, 7-6(1)) to give the Irish a 6-0 lead with one court remaining.

Daniel Rayl completed the sweep for Notre Dame as he came back from a first set loss to claim the second and force a third set breaker. He won the break point on court three to send Toledo home.
