CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the second consecutive tournament, Notre Dame senior golfer Miguel Delgado notched a top-five showing, finishing in a tie for second place at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. As a team, the Fighting Irish stayed in fifth place on Sunday, after climbing seven spots in round two, recording a three-round total of 878 (+14).
“These six young men impressed me with this week with their mental toughness,” Notre Dame head coach John Handrigan stated. “At Notre Dame we are never happy with a fifth place finish, but we were in 12th place after the first round, and it takes a lot of toughness to bounce back. All year we’ve been working on this mindset and we are getting close – just in time for the postseason.”
Delgado climbed four spots over the course of round three to jump into second place, tying his career-best finish (previously finished in second place at the 2017 AutoTrader Collegiate Classic). Delgado fired off a 71 (-1) on Sunday to finish with a 213 (-3). It marked his fifth event under-par over the last six tournaments.
“Back-to-back top fives for Miguel, with our strength of schedule, is playing some excellent golf,” Handrigan added. “The best part about Miguel is he isn’t happy with top fives and he’s motivated to win.”
FINAL ROUND
Delgado tallied birdies on one, three and six, reaching as low as three-under par through eight holes before hitting a slight bump with a bogey on nine. Delgado countered with a birdie on the par-4 10th, but suffered a later setback in the form of bogeys on 14 and 18.
Taichi Kho moved up 11 spots on Sunday to 28th place after achieving an even-par round of 72. Kho tallied two bogeys and two birdies on the front and split three bogeys and birdies on the back half. Important to note that the freshman improved by two strokes each round this weekend.
Davis Lamb also climbed the standings on Sunday, moving up eight spots into 36th place. Lamb shot a 73, one-over par, and matched Kho on the day with five birdies. Lamb, who shot a 78 in round one, thus bounced back with back-to-back rounds of 73 to total a 224 (+8).
Andrew O’Leary rounded out the team scoring today with a 76, four-over par. O’Leary finished with a 224 (+8) for the tournament as well, tying Lamb for 36th place.
Ben Albin ended his weekend in 43rd place with a 225 (+9). Individual competitor Alex Jamieson finished in 74th place with a 234 (+18).
