Deacons Take Friday Night Battle From Irish

NOTRE DAME, Indiana — With four three-set singles matches, the Notre Dame women’s tennis team fought No. 17 Wake Forest to the end, but dropped a 5-2 decision to the Demon Deacons on Friday night at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Cameron Corse and Bess Waldram were singles winners for Notre Dame in the effort.

How It Happened

The Irish took the first doubles match, with Zoe Taylor and Ally Bojczuk winning on court three, 6-2, over Anna Brylin and Peyton Pesavento. The Deacs rallied to win the point, however, taking 6-4 decisions on both courts one and two.

The Demon Deacons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in singles. Pesavento defeated Taylor, 6-3, 6-2 at court six, in the only match which lacked drama. The third Wake point came at one singles where Emma Davis defeated Zoe Spence, 7-6, 7-5. The Irish had their backs against the wall, but pushed all four remaining matches into a third set.

Bess Waldram got the Irish on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Brylin at court four. With three matches to go, Wake clinched the match with a three-set victory by Chandler Carter over Brooke Broda (6-3, 5-7, 6-1). The Deacons scored another three-set win at two singles, with Eliza Omirou defeated Ally Bojczuk, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Notre Dame got to the final margin of 5-2 thanks to Corse rallying to defeat Saby Nihalani, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
