ANN ARBOR, Michigan — An Irish four-goal run in the second half broke an 8-8 deadlock and propelled No. 11 Notre Dame to a 12-9 win at Michigan on Tuesday evening at the U-M Lacrosse Field. With the win, the Irish improve to 4-2 overall while Michigan drops to 3-4.
Wheaton Jackoboice (1G, 2A) and Brendan Gleason (2G, 1A) each paced the Irish offense with three points. Senior Hugh Crance and sophomore Arden Cohen each caused a pair of Wolverines turnovers.
How It Happened
Michigan opened the scoring 1:53 into play, but the Irish rattled off three consecutive goals to earn a 3-1 advantage. Senior Brendan Gleason evened the score with 12:03 left in the opening quarter before goals from junior Brian Willetts and sophomore Connor Morin put the Irish up by a pair.
Michigan scored with 2:40 remaining in the frame to make it a 3-2 contest after one quarter.
The two sides split the first four goals of the second stanza, with freshman Quinn McCahon netting a pair for the Irish, to keep Notre Dame on top by a goal with 2:16 left in the half at 5-4.
Notre Dame earned a three-goal cushion at the break with goals in the final minute by junior Tommy McNamara and sophomore John Hallenbeck.
Michigan scored four of the first five goals of the third frame, with junior Bryan Costabile scoring for the Irish at the 4:41 mark, to even the score at 8-8.
Freshman Griffin Westlin netted one with just one second remaining to restore a 9-8 lead for Notre Dame entering the final quarter.
Sophomore Wheaton Jackoboice, Gleason and Morin scored three consecutive goals for the Irish to open the fourth frame to make the score 12-8 with 6:57 to go.
Michigan scored with 1:26 remaining to account for the 12-9 final.

Junior Charles Leonard was dominant at the X for the Irish, winning 20-of-24 faceoffs while also collecting a career-best 16 ground balls.
