THE MICHIGAN SERIES
- Tuesday will be the fourth meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Michigan. The Irish lead the series 2-1.
- The two teams met once last season, with the Wolverines escaping with a 13-12 win in Arlotta Stadium.
- Notre Dame has scored at least 12 goals in every meeting with Michigan in the series.
SENSATIONAL SECOND QUARTERS
- The Irish have played their best lacrosse this season in second quarters, outscoring opponents 20-5 over the five games.
- Notre Dame has allowed just one goal in each second stanza this season.
- The team’s best second quarter performance came at No. 11 Virginia, outscoring the Cavaliers 6-1.
THE 300 CLUB
- Baumer Family Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin Corrigan is one of just four active Division I coaches to reach the 300-win mark.
- Corrigan has an overall record of 307-155 in his 32 seasons of coaching.
- The head coach is 297-141 in his 30 seasons at Notre Dame.
- Corrigan is the longest tenured men’s lacrosse coach at the DI level.
STIFLING DEFENSE
- Notre Dame’s dominating defense has picked up right where it left off from 2018 in the first five games of the season. The Irish are allowing 9.60 goals per game in 2019, holding Richmond (9), Detroit Mercy (6) and No. 8 Denver (7) to fewer than 10 scores.
- The Irish have caused 45 turnovers over the first five games this season.
- Even more impressively, the Irish held Detroit Mercy scoreless for a stretch of 31:55 between the second and fourth quarters.
- The Irish allowed an average of 9.6 goals per game to rank 18th in the country in 2018, despite facing some of the most potent attacks at the DI level.
- Notre Dame held 10 of its 15 opponents to fewer than 10 goals in 2018.
- The Irish returned all three starting close defensemen from last season’s squad along with their goalkeeper.
BALANCED ATTACK
- The Irish have five players with 11 or more points entering Tuesday’s game.
- Senior attackman Brendan Gleason (10G, 5A) leads the team in points and juniors Bryan Costabile (12G, 2A) and Brian Willetts (11G, 3A) each have 14.
- The sophomore attacking duo of Connor Morin (8G, 5A) and Wheaton Jackoboice (6G, 5A) have combined for 24 points through five games.
- Eight Notre Dame players have recorded the first goals of their career in 2019 (Connor Morin, Griffin Westlin, Charlie Leonard, Wheaton Jackoboice, Quinn McCahon, Mo Mirer, John Hallenbeck and Stephen Chase).
NOTRE DAME VS. TOP-10 TEAMS
- Notre Dame is 36-27 against teams ranked in the top 10 in the USILA Coaches Poll since the start of the 2008 season, including a mark of 2-0 in 2019.
- The Irish are 14-12 since 2012 against teams ranked in the top five in the USILA Coaches Poll.
- Notre Dame has two wins this season against teams ranked at the time of the game, defeating No. 2 Maryland (3/3/19) and No. 8 Denver (3/9/19).
SCHMIDT STEPS UP
- Matt Schmidt is playing his best lacrosse of his young Notre Dame career between the pipes over the past month.
- The sophomore goalie has combined to make 32 saves over the last three games, including a career-high 11 in the overtime victory over Maryland.
- Schmidt is 3-2 on the season and ranks 14th in the country in average goals allowed with a mark of 9.45.
