Bojczuk & Broda Win As Irish Rally Falls Short At Miami

CORAL GABLES, Florida — The No. 42 Notre Dame women’s tennis team got singles wins from Ally Bojczuk and Brooke Broda, but saw a valiant comeback effort fall short at No. 27 Miami. The hosts jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Bojcuzk and Broda’s victories, but a battle at three singles went to the Hurricanes to clinch the match before the hosts also won a three-set contest at four singles to provide the final margin of 5-2.

How It Happened

The hosts took the doubles point with wins on court two and court one. First was the court two victory, where Estella Perez-Somarriba and Ulyana Shirokova defeated Brooke Broda and Bess Waldram, 6-1. At the top of the lineup in a battle of nationally ranked pairs, the 44th-ranked pair of Daevenia Aching and Daniella Roldan defeated the 57th-ranked tandem of Cameron Corse and Zoe Spence, 6-2.

The Hurricanes quickly ran the score to 3-0 in singles action. At the top of the lineup, Perez-Somarriba, the nation’s second-ranked singles player, defeated Spence, 6-1, 6-0. Then at six singles, Lucia Marzal was victorious over Zoe Taylor, 6-1, 6-4.

Notre Dame made it interested with a pair of victories to cut the score to 3-2. Ally Bojczuk won at two singles (7-5, 6-1) over Roldan before Broda won at five over Shirokvova (6-4, 7-5). The team score came down to action at courts three and four.

With Waldram and Una Ito locked in a three-set battle on court four, Corse dropped a pair of contested sets to Achong to decide the match, 7-6, 7-5. Waldram would end up losing in three sets (6-7, 6-2, 6-1) to provide the final margin of 5-2.

Match Notes

  • Bojczuk improved to 10-4 in singles action this spring, including a 9-1 mark on court two.
  • Broda is also 10-4 on the spring in singles, with a 6-3 mark on court five.
  • Spence dropped to 2-3 when facing a nationally ranked opponent this season.
