Spence Scores Top-10 Win As Irish Fall To No. 1 UNC

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina — Zoe Spence earned a win over the nation’s sixth-ranked singles player, but that was the only point for the Notre Dame women’s tennis team in a 6-1 setback at No. 1 North Carolina. The Irish also got a doubles victory from Zoe Taylor and Ally Bojczuk.

How It Happened

UNC’s 16th-ranked doubles team of Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham won a 6-0 decision at the top of the doubles lineup before Taylor and Bojczuk took a 6-3 decision from Alle Sanford and Sara Daavettila on court three. The Tar Heels won the doubles point with a 6-4 victory by Makenna Jones and Cameron Morra (No. 4) over Cameron Corse and Bess Waldram.

Morra, ranked 27th in singles, made it 2-0 UNC with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Waldram. At the top of the lineup Jones, the country’s number two singles player, secured a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bojczuk. The Tar Heels clinched the match at six singles, where No. 122 Sanford won over Maeve Koscielski, 6-1, 6-3.

Aney’s 6-3, 6-1 win over Brooke Broda on court five made it 5-0 and Graham (No. 5) won in two sets over Cameron Corse, 6-3, 7-6. Spence then capped the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Daavettila, who entered the weekend ranked sixth in the naiton.
