NOTRE DAME, Ind. — No. 12 Notre Dame returns to campus for a marquee non-conference matchup against No. 2 Maryland at noon on Sunday, March 3. The game will be broadcast ESPNU and can be found on the WatchESPN app or at WatchESPN.com.

THE MARYLAND SERIES

  • Sunday marks the 12th meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Maryland. The Terrapins hold a narrow 6-5 advantage in the series.
  • The most recent installment of the series came last season in College Park. The Irish fell to Maryland by a final score of 12-10.
  • Notre Dame has claimed wins in four of the last five meetings. 
  • Sunday’s game will be the fifth time the two sides have played at Notre Dame. The Irish won the most recent game at home against the Terrapins, grinding out a 5-4 victory in the 2017 season.
  • The Irish have not allowed Maryland to score more than six goals in four of the last five meetings.

NOTRE DAME VS. TOP-10 TEAMS

  • Notre Dame is 35-27 against teams ranked in the top 10 in the USILA Coaches Poll since the start of the 2008 season.
  • The Irish are 14-12 since 2012 against teams ranked in the top five in the USILA Coaches Poll.
  • Notre Dame is scheduled to face six teams in the current USILA rankings, as Maryland (No. 2), Cornell (No. 3), Duke (No. 6), Denver (No. 8), Ohio State (No. 9) and Virginia (No. 10) are all in the top 10. 

STIFLING DEFENSE

  • Notre Dame’s dominating defense has picked up right where it left off in the first two games of the season. The Irish are allowing 7.5 goals per game in 2019, holding Richmond (9) and Detroit Mercy (6) to fewer than 10 scores.
  • The Irish have caused 26 turnovers over the first two games this season.
  • Even more impressively, the Irish held Detroit Mercy scoreless for a stretch of 31:55 between the second and fourth quarters.
  • The Irish allowed an average of 8.6 goals per game to rank ninth in the country in 2018, despite facing some of the most potent attacks at the DI level.
  • Notre Dame held 10 of its 15 opponents to fewer than 10 goals in 2018.
  • The Irish returned all three starting close defensemen from last season’s squad along with their goalkeeper.

IRISH PLACE TWO ON TEWAARATON AWARD WATCH LIST

  • The Tewaaraton Foundation unveiled its first watch list of the season on Thursday evening and the Irish had two student-athletes appear on the list.
  • Senior attackman Brendan Gleason and junior midfielder Bryan Costabile each achieved the recognition.
  • Costabile has seven goals and an assist while Gleason has added four goals and one assist on the season.

ATTACKING OUTBURST

  • The Irish attack put up 19 goals on the scoreboard in the season-opening win over Detroit Mercy.
  • The 19 goals are the most the Irish have scored in a game since defeating Dartmouth 20-8 on Feb. 28, 2015.
  • The 19 goals are the most the Irish have scored in a season opener since also scoring 19 to begin the 2014 season.
  • The 13-goal win is the largest margin of victory in an opener since the team defeated Canisius by a score of 21-5 to start the 1993 campaign.
  • Stephen Chase, Griffin Westlin (2), Charlie Leonard (2), Quinn McCahon, Connor Morin and Wheaton Jackoboice each scored the first goals of their careers against the Titans.

THE 300 CLUB

  • Baumer Family Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin Corrigan is one of just four active Division I coaches to reach the 300-win mark.
  • Corrigan has an overall record of 305-154 in his 32 seasons of coaching.
  • The head coach is 295-140 in his 30 seasons at Notre Dame.
  • Corrigan is the longest tenured men’s lacrosse coach at the DI level.
