Irish Complete ACC Indoor Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. – At the completion of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at Virginia Tech’s Rector Fieldhouse, the Notre Dame men’s track and field program finished in sixth place with 41 points while the women came in eighth with 33 points.

The first day was highlighted by both the men’s and women’s DMR. On the men’s side, the team of Vincent Zona, Edward Cheatham, Samuel Voelz and Yared Nuguse took the ACC crown with a first place time of 9:38.85, besting the next best team by seven seconds.

Meanwhile, the women’s team of Mikayla Schneider, Grace Cronin, Kelly Hart and Rachel DaDamio came in third with a time of 11:13.73, less than second off from Florida State’s second place finish.

However, Yared Nuguse wasn’t done there, stealing the spotlight with a first place finish in the men’s one mile run. His time of 3:57.93 not only bested the next finisher by six seconds, but also marked the eighth best time by an NCAA Division I runner this indoor season.

Individually, Notre Dame dominated both the men’s and women’s weight throws, setting school records in both. Junior Logan Kusky claimed the top spot on the men’s side with a throw of 21.37 meters. Over on the women’s side, the Irish took the top spots as junior Abbey Kapitan earned second with 20.76 meters while Rachel Tanczos won the title at 21.08 meters.

Notre Dame posted two other top-five finishes on the day. Senior Kelly Hart took fifth place in the women’s 800 meter final with a time of 2:07.83. Furthermore, freshman Colton Crum earned a fourth place showing in the men’s pole vault, finishing at 5.05 meters.
