Three-Set Thrillers Send Irish Past Clemson

NOTRE DAME, Indiana — The Notre Dame women’s tennis team used the doubles point and four singles wins, two in three-sets, to move to 2-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play thanks to a 5-2 victory over Clemson on Friday night.

Head coach Alison Silverio’s squad took the doubles point with victories on courts two and three, before taking four of six singles matches with wins from Ally Bojczuk, Bess Waldram, Cameron Corse (via retirement) and Brooke Broda.

How It Happened

Cameron Corse and Bess Waldram had their work cut out for them at the top of the doubles lineup, facing the nation’s number-one doubles team in Clemson’s Marie-Alexandre Leduc and Fernanda Navarro, but the rest of the Irish lineup responded after the Tigers won 6-3 at the top of the lineup. Bojczuk and Zoe Taylor took a 6-2 decision at three doubles, while Spence and Broda won by an identical score to make it 1-0 Irish.

The score was quickly 3-0 during singles. Clemson’s Tate Schroeder retired from her match with Corse with the score tied 3-3 in the first set, then Broda delivered a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Ally-Miller Kraslinikov at five singles.

The Tigers did not go quietly, with Alex Angyalosy winning 6-4, 6-0 over Maeve Koscielski at six singles to cut the Notre Dame lead to 3-1. The three remaining matches all went three sets, with Leduc winning over Spence (6-0, 6-7, 6-3) to bring the visitors within a point, 3-2.

Waldram was locked in a tight battle at three singles, with each player winning a 7-6 decision before Waldram clinched the match by cruising to a 6-0 win in the third set. The win came just before another the Irish took another battle at two singles, with Bojczuk defeating Fernanda Navarro 7-5, 2-6, 7-6.

Silverio’s Story
Head coach Alison Silverio on the match…

On Waldram’s win…
“Her mindset is very strong. We want to see those battles out there. Bess knew the adjustments that she needed to make from the second set to the third set and she committed to them. So much of it in tennis and in these matches we’re playing is the commitment to wanting the ball and wanting to go about it the right way. That’s what she was able to do in the third set. She was playing a high-level player, but credit to Bess for staying committed.”

On Bojczuk’s win…
“It says a lot (that the match was tightly contested even after the team score was decided) not only about Ally, but also the team, that regardless of the result we’re going to fight through the finish. Even though the team match had been won, that’s a huge little victory for us. Not only for Ally, but for the team to say we’re going to come after it no matter what situation we’re in.”

On Broda’s win…
“Brooke was the catalyst for us today, getting another point on the board quickly and taking care of business. For her, she has a lot of experience to draw on. It’s great to see her catching her stride.”

On winning doubles in spite of losing at one doubles…
“That’s a great feeling. Not only as a coach, but certainly as a team to build confidence. In the ACC, every line, whether you’re at one, two or three, is going to be competitive. We’ve got three great doubles teams and three pairs that are working extremely well together. I know our number one is going to bounce back from today and the differences are small. As we continue to work on the details we’ll continue developing.”
