Irish Smash Records, Claim Two Titles at ACC Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. — University of Notre Dame track and field program boasted two record-breaking championship performances Friday, sweeping the men’s and women’s weight throw events at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at Virginia Tech’s Rector Fieldhouse.

The Irish men and women each sit in fourth place after the end of two days of competition.

Junior Logan Kusky and sophomore Rachel Tanczos will bring home shiny new hardware to accompany their new school records, giving the Irish a pair of ACC titles to highlight the day. Kusky’s toss of 21.37 meters bested his own record of 21.13 meters set last week at the Alex Wilson Invitational, while Tanczos’ throw of 21.08m also felled a week-old record (20.13m) set by teammate Abbey Kapitan, who finished second with a throw of 20.76m at Friday’s championships.

With most of the running events in preliminaries Friday, the Irish saw a handful of competitors advance to Saturday’s final heats. Sophomore Yared Nuguse advanced to the men’s mile final after finishing first in his heat and second overall with a time of 4:06.96, while junior Rachel DaDamio ran into the women’s mile final with a 10th place overall finish in 4:45.43.

Junior Summer Thorpe placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, good for a qualifying time in 8.27.

In the finals of the women’s 5000 meters, freshman Jacqueline Gaughan finished seventh in 16:23.26, while Kevin Salvano placed seventh in the men’s race after a first-place run (14:18.52) in the unseeded heat earlier in the day.
