Irish Open Weekend Strong At Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The University of Notre Dame swimming and diving program opened their weekend in Columbus, Ohio showing great promise as they near the championship season. The women concluded the first day with 11 top-five finishes in the finals while the men boasted five.

Sofia Revilak lead the women with a third place finish in the 100 fly before winning the 100 free and bringing the Irish a sweep in the event. Kelly Jacob and Rachel Wittmer completed the Irish sweep as they claimed the second and third place times, separated by just 0.64 seconds. In the men’s event, Dan Fujan won the 100 free to give the Irish the top finisher for both sides.

How It Happened
Reilly Lanigan finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.33 while Becca Walton scored the fourth place time in 4:54.22.

In the 100 fly, Sofia Revilak and Rachel Wittmer finished just 1.0 seconds apart for third and fourth respectively, their first top-five finish of the day.

Sammie Eyolfson followed up with a third place finish of her own when she touched the wall for the 100 breast in 1:02.75. The men also placed third in the event as Luke Barrett came in at 55.96 seconds.

The men followed up with a silver place finish in the 100 back as JP Becker found the finish in 49.74 seconds and second overall.

The lone Irish sweep of the day came in the 100 free as Sofia Revilak, Kelly Jacob and Rachel Wittmer finished first through third in the event. Dan Fujan came up with a first place finish of his own in the 100 free as he touched the wall in 44.07 seconds with Dan Bannon shortly behind, finishing fourth.

The Notre Dame women’s A relay rounded out the day for the Irish at the top, as the team claimed silver with a time of 1:32.77 in the 200 free relay.

The Irish enter the final day of competition at the Ohio State Winter Invitational on Sunday, February 17 at 10 a.m. The finals will begin at 4 p.m. with the team looking to finish as strong as they started.
