Cabrera and Howells Earn ACC Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. — For the second week in a row, the University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team has been awarded Atlantic Coast Conference honors. Following two set wins in doubles last Friday (February 8), Guillermo Cabrera and William Howells have been named Doubles Team of the Week by the conference as announced Tuesday.

Competing for the first time as a pair, Cabrera and Howells opened the afternoon off with a 6-3 victory on the third court to clinch the doubles point for the Irish, leading the team to an eventual 6-1 win over ACC foe, Boston College.

The tandem returned to the court that evening as the top doubles pair in the team’s sweep over Ball State. Cabrera and Howells defeated their Cardinals opponents 6-2, finishing first in what was a dominating performance by the entire team.

The two men also went 5-1 in singles competition last week, with Cabrera undefeated through three matches. Howells’ lone loss came to No. 116 Caleb Chakravarthi of Illinois in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 2-6).

This is the first career ACC Player of the Week honor for either.

The Irish are back in action this week as they head to Chicago for the ITA National Indoors. Their first match is scheduled for Friday with an opponent yet to be determined.
