BLOOMINGTON, Indiana — Cameron Corse’s rally to win in three sets clinched a 4-3 victory for Notre Dame at Indiana on Sunday. The hosts took the doubles point before the Irish came back with singles victories from Zoe Spence, Bess Waldram, Corse and Zoe Taylor.
The victory moved the Irish to 4-2 on the young season as they get set to return home for their next five contests.
How It Happened
Indiana won the doubles point with wins on courts one and two by identical 6-2 margins. Maidson Appel and Jelly Bozovic defeated Corse and Spence at the top of the lineup, while Caitlin Bernard and Natalie Whalen won over Ally Bojczuk and Waldram at the two-spot.
Taylor, a freshman, started the Irish singles comeback thanks to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Somer Henry on court six. The top of the lineup then gave Notre Dame a 2-1 lead when Spence won a 6-4, 6-3 match from Appel.
Indiana tied the match at two with a court-five victory from Michelle McKamey over Maeve Koscielski (7-5 6-1). Notre Dame moved within a point of the win thanks to Waldram’s win over Bernard on court three. Waldram won the first set 6-3 then took a dramatic 12-10 tiebreak to take the second, 7-6, and the match.
The Irish secured their fourth win of the season on court four. Corse dropped the first set, 6-1, to Bozovic, but came storming back to win the ensuing sets 6-3, 6-3, and earn the clinching point. On court two, Whalen and Bojczuk split the first two sets before playing a super tiebreak in the third with the team score already decided. Whalen took that tiebreak, 13-11, to provide the final margin of 4-3.
Match Notes
- Corse and Taylor remain perfect in singles actions during the dual season. Corse is 5-0 (4-0 at four, 1-0 and five), while Taylor is 4-0 (all at six).
- Koscelski suffered her first setback of the season while playing five singles. She had been 3-0 at the spot this spring.
- Notre Dame improved to 21-11 all-time against Indiana and the Irish have won four straight against the Hoosiers.
