Irish Place Four On All-ACC Academic Team

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Four University of Notre Dame men’s soccer student-athletes were selected to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) All-Academic Men’s Soccer Team for the 2018 season. The conference office officially released the latest edition of its all-academic squad on Thursday.

Senior defender Patrick Berneski, junior midfielder Jack Casey, senior defender Sean Dedrick and senior forward Thomas Ueland were named to the 2018 ACC All-Academic Team. Casey received the recognition for the second time in his career, while Berneski, Dedrick and Ueland were honored for the first time.

The Irish have had at least four players earn the accolade in each season competing in the ACC, spanning back to the 2013 campaign.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

Berneski (Warrington, Pennsylvania) started and played the entirety of all 21 matches during the 2018 campaign. Despite playing as a defender, the skipper tied for the team lead in goals with six on the season. The graduate student was lethal on set pieces, scoring all six goals from corners or free kicks. Five of Berneski’s six goals came from headers.

Berneski completed his undergraduate degree earlier this spring and is working on an MS in Management. The center back has a GPA of 3.39 in grad school.

Casey (Morristown, New Jersey) has competed in 58 games over three seasons in the Irish midfield. He has scored one goal and added 11 assists.

Casey has earned accolades for his academic achievements throughout his career. He earned Academic All-America Second Team honors for the second straight season in 2018. The junior has a GPA of 3.96 while double majoring in economics and political science, and is a three-time Dean’s List recipient. He was also named to the 2016 and 2017 ACC Academic Honor Roll as part of his outstanding academic achievement.

Dedrick (Wilton, Connecticut) was one of the most consistent players for the Irish in 2018. The senior played in all 21 matches at the right back position, earning 18 starts, despite being plagued by injury. The senior was instrumental in the success the Irish had on the defensive end of the pitch as the team posted nine clean sheets and held opponents to one or no goals in 17 of 21 outings. The right back also notched two assists, including the secondary assist for the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat No. 10 Virginia in the NCAA Championship Round of 16.

Dedrick is set to graduate in May with a degree in finance from the Mendoza College of Business. The senior has a GPA of 3.70 and posted a perfect 4.0 in the fall semester.

Ueland (Lexington, Kentucky) appeared in 75 matches at forward for Notre Dame over his career. He bagged 14 goals and added four assists to total 32 points, chipping in five game-winning goals during his Irish tenure. Ueland finished the season tied for the team lead in goals with six (two game-winning goals) and dished out an assist. He was named to the 2018 All-ACC Second Team in recognition of his strong play.

Ueland has maintained a 3.95 GPA as a biological sciences major, and has been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in each of his previous three seasons (2015, 2016 and 2017).
