Records Fall In Session Two Of Shamrock Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Irish wrapped the first day of the Shamrock Invitational with the women maintaining a strong lead and the men forging ahead to hold second. The evening concluded with back-to-back pool records for the team in the 800 free relay when the women posted a time of 7:10.57 before the men powered into the wall in 6:24.86. The records brought the team’s one-day tally to five records broken after Carly Quast and the 400 medley relay team shattered two records in the morning session and the 200 medley relay broke another to begin the second session.

“Today’s competition was fantastic for our teams. Not only did we have to go back-to-back sessions and swim multiple events but it got us to a place where we haven’t been in a while — racing, and racing kart, and racing a lot,” Head Coach Mike Litzinger said.

Notre Dame finished with a combined six first-place times in the evening portion of the event, including three relays. Marci Barta, Abbie Dolan and Zach Yeadon all posted individual top-times to add to the Irish accolades.

The women total 746.50 as they hold a large lead heading into the final day of competition. The men hold steady in second with 564.50 points, behind only Ohio State.

“I’m very proud of our student-athletes today as we broke several pool records and stacked up against some great national level competition,” he added. “We’re looking forward to tomorrow where we get to honor our senior class which will be very special moment for them and for us and finishing off the Shamrock Invitational in style.”

Statistical Standouts
Abbie Dolan was a member of all three record breaking women’s relay teams on Friday. As the anchor in the 400 medley relay, Dolan’s split of 48.07 in the 100 free led the team to a first place finish and secured the record setting time of 3:37.04.

To kick off the evening session, Dolan again served as anchor as she touched the wall for the 200 medley relay team in 1:37.80.

As the lead-off swimmer in the women’s 800 free relay, Dolan’s 200 free split time of 1:46.96 gave the Irish the early lead as they eventually clocked a time of 7:15.50 to add their names to the Rolfs Aquatics Center records board.

Dolan also took first in her individual 200 free event Friday evening, touching the wall in 1:47.54.
