IRISH TAKE ON NO. 3/3 VIRGINIA ON CBS SATURDAY AFTERNOON

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (11-8, 1-5 ACC) plays host to No. 3/3 Virginia (17-1, 5-1) on CBS Saturday afternoon (1 p.m. ET). Notre Dame will be wearing green jerseys for the first time this season and fans attending the game are encouraged to wear green to support the team.

The Irish are in the midst of a stretch of eight Atlantic Coast Conference games that feature five ranked teams – including three contests against top-10 ranked opponents.

MR. MOONEY ONE OF FIVE MAJOR CONFERENCE PLAYERS AVERAGING A DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Junior forward John Mooney (dubbed Mr. Mooney by Notre Dame Basketball Radio Network Analyst Zach Hillesland) has posted three consecutive monster efforts (16 pts, 19 reb at No. 13/15 North Carolina; 19 pts, 16 reb vs. No. 16/17 NC State; 22 pts, 14 reb at Georgia Tech) that have vaulted him into avearaging a double-double this season (14.4 ppg, 10.8 rpg).

Mooney joins Minnesota’s Jordan Murphy (14.6 pts, 12.1 reb), Kansas’ Dedric Lawson (19.5 pts, 10.9 reb), Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ (19.8 pts, 10.3 reb) and Maryland’s Bruno Fernando (14.4 pts, 10.4 reb) as the only major conference players averaging a double-double in 2018-19.

Add in Mooney’s .534 field-goal percentage and the list of players averaging double-doubles and shooting over .535 from the field is trimmed to just Mooney, Happ and Fernando.

Add in Mooney’s .425 three-point field goal percenage – and he becomes the only major conference player to average over 10 points, 10 rebounds, .535 FG% and .400 3FG% (minimum of 30 attempts).

MOONEY LEADS ACC IN DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Junior forward John Mooney has raised his level of play to an all-conference level in 2018-19 and currently leads the ACC in rebounding (10.8 per game) and in double-doubles (11 in 19 games played).

One of five major conference players averaging a double-double this season (14.4 ppg, 10.8 rpg), Mooney entered the season with 4.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg averages.

Notre Dame vs. VIRGINIA SERIES HISTORY

  • Notre Dame and Virginia will be meeting for the 14th time on Saturday afternoon, with the Cavaliers leading the all-time series 11-2.
  • The Irish won the first meeting between the two programs in a game held at Allstate Arena (then the Rosemont Horizon) when Notre Dame knocked off top-ranked Virginia and Ralph Sampson on a last-second jump shot by Orlando Woolridge.
  • Virginia then won the next nine meetings in the series before the Irish broke through for a 71-58 victory in the 2017 ACC Semifinals to earn the program’s second ACC championship game berth in its first four seasons in the conference.
  • Saturday marks the first of two meetings with Virginia in ACC play this year, as the Irish will head to Charlottesville on Saturday, Feb. 16.

NOTRE DAME vs. VIRGINIA – BY THE NUMBERS

1

Notre Dame is the only team in NCAA Division this season to win a game playing just six players after the 69-66 victory over Boston College on January 12, 2019.

2

Junior guard T.J. Gibbs ranks second in the ACC for assist/turnover ratio (3.40), joining freshman backcourt mate Prentiss Hubb (7th, 2.13) in the top 10.

3.20

Junior Juwan Durham leads the ACC in blocked shots per game with a 3.20 average (48 total in 15 games played).  That number puts him fifth in the country entering this week’s college basketball action.

5

Junior John Mooney is on a run of five games with double-doubles, posting a 19.8 ppg and 15.0 rpg average over those five games.

7

Mike Brey has posted 11 victories over top-five ranked teams at Notre Dame – with seven of those wins earned as an unranked team.  The Irish will face back-to-back matchups against top five teams over a 53-hour period on Saturday (No. 3/3 Virginia) and Monday (No. 2/2 Duke). See page 11 for a complete list of top-five victories.

9.7

With a 9.7 average, Notre Dame is fifth in the country in turnovers committed per game and will face national-leader Virginia (8.7) on Saturday.

11

John Mooney leads the ACC and is tied for ninth in the country with 11 double-doubles (he is tied for fourth in double-doubles among major conference players). He also paces the ACC in 10-rebound performances with 13 this season.

13.7

Notre Dame, on average, is committing just 13.7 personal fouls per game – which is tied with Michigan for the NCAA lead in that statistical category.

19

After logging the first scoreless game of his career against No. 16/17 NC State on Jan. 19, freshman Nate Laszewski responded with a career-high 19 points in 31 minutes off the bench at Georgia Tech. Laszewski has now scored in double figures six times this season.

19

Recovering from an ankle injury at No. 13/15 North Carolina, John Mooney responded with a career-high 19 rebounds – tied for the fifth-most in the Mike Brey era at Notre Dame. It was the most since Zach Auguste pulled down 22 missed shots against Duke in an overtime victory in the 2016 ACC tournament second round.  See page 3 for more on Mooney’s big game.

200

John Mooney is the latest Irish player to make a significant jump in their statistical production during their junior seasons in the Notre Dame program. He is poised to become the 10th junior since the 2005-06 season to improve their scoring by at least 200 points during their junior season. See page 11 for a more detailed breakdown.

966

T.J. Gibbs is just 34 points away from reaching 1,000 in his career at Notre Dame and will become the 63rd Irish player to reach that career scoring plateau. Notre Dame is tied for fifth in NCAA history for 1,000-point scorers (see page 5 for more details).

2004

The last time Notre Dame faced back-to-back top-five opponents at home was during the 2003-04 season, when the Irish lost 66-58 to No. 4/4 Pittsburgh on Feb. 7, 2004, then defeated No. 5/5 UConn 80-74 on Feb. 9, 2004.
