#1 Irish Continue Winning Ways In Philly

PHILADELPHIA — The No. 1 University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams turned in a successful Sunday performance at the Philadelphia Invitational, combining for a 5-1 record to bring their weekend tally to 13-3 overall.

The Irish men (12-1) swept No. 6 Yale, NYU and No. 4 Columbia at Penn’s Tse Center on Sunday. The women’s side (11-2) defeated Yale and NYU, but fell to the No. 3 Columbia women.

Senior men’s foilist Axel Kiefer assembled a 7-2 mark Sunday, capping a weekend in which he went 13-6 overall (6-4 at St. John’s Invitational). Sophomore epeeist Stephen Ewart went 6-3 to improve to 14-7 on the weekend, while junior squad mate Ariel Simmons went 6-0 on the day.

Freshman women’s foilist Amita Berthier continued to impress with an undefeated 9-0 showing, improving to 19-2 over two days at St. John’s and Penn. Freshman sabreuse Kara Linder also showed out with a 4-0 mark on the day to finish 16-3 on the weekend. Junior sabreuse Regina O’Brien also contributed a 7-2 Sunday record.

How It Happened

Yale

The Irish men picked up a 17-10 win over the sixth-ranked Yale men’s squad, while the women also coasted to a 21-6 victory over the Bulldogs.

Simmons and Ewart each posted 3-0 marks in epee, while senior Dylan French added two wins for the squad. Kiefer was 2-1 in foil, while junior sabreur Arsenii Panteleev also went 2-1.

The women’s sabre squad led the way in their match, anchored by junior Regina O’Brien’s 3-0 performance. Natalie Disher and Christina Boitano went 2-0 in the event. The Irish went 8-1 in foil, led by Berthier and junior Finnula Mageras, who each went 3-0.

NYU

The men defeated NYU 19-8, while the women nearly swept to a 25-2 victory.

Kiefer and freshman sabreur Jared Smith earned the maximum three wins in the match, while junior epeeist Aidan Antekeier, freshman sabreur Logan Kanary and sophomore sabreur Colin Campbell each went 2-0. Sophomores Joseph Marino and Robert Wong each added 2-1 marks in foil.

For the women, seven fencers recorded 3-0 marks: Berthier, O’Brien, Disher, Boitano, Molly Hudson, Julia Barry and Samantha Viqueira.

Columbia

The men capped the day with an 18-9 victory over the No. 4 Lions — the second of the weekend — while the women fell to their No. 3 counterparts 16-11.

On the men’s side, Simmons again went 3-0 in the match, while senior epeeist Darius Zacharakis was 2-0. Kiefer. Panteleev and Smith each posted 2-1 records in their respective weapons.

The women got 3-0 performances from Berthier and Linder, while senior foilist Sabrina Massialas went 2-1 in the loss.
