Keys to the Meets: St. John's & Philadelphia Invitationals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing squads remain undefeated after strong performances this fall, and will look to enhance their resumes as they swing eastward to compete at the St. John’s and Philadelphia Invitationals on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

St. John’s Invitational

The Irish will spend Saturday in Queens, N.Y., competing against the nation’s top teams in St. John’s, Harvard, Columbia, Penn State and Ohio State, each of which finished in the top six at last year’s National Collegiate Fencing Championships.

At last year’s St. John’s Invitational, the Irish women posted a 4-0 record, while the men went 2-2.

2:15 p.m. — vs. St. John’s
3:30 p.m. — vs. Ohio State

Philadelphia Invitational

The Irish will continue their East Coast visit and hit the second day of Penn’s Philadelphia Invitational to face Yale, NYU, the Drew men and Temple women, in addition to Columbia and St. John’s in rematches from Saturday.

Last Time Out

The Irish will compete for the first time since Nov. 18, 2018, when each team posted perfect records at Ohio State’s Elite Invitational. The Irish women went 5-0, defeating Ohio State, Penn State, North Carolina, Northwestern and Princeton, while the men’s 5-0 mark featured victories over Ohio State, Penn State, North Carolina, Princeton and Penn.

For the Irish women, senior epeeist Amanda Sirico led the way with a 10-1 record on the day, while juniors Morgan Partridge and Samantha Viqueira and sophomore Stefani Deschner went 8-1 in foil. Freshman Kara Linder posted a 9-3 mark in sabre, while classmate Miriam Grady notched an 8-4 record in epee.

The men were led by a 14-1 mark by sophomore foilist Nick Itkin, while freshman squad-mate Andrew Machovec went 12-3 on the day. Freshman sabreur Alessandro Contreras was 10-1, while classmate Malcolm Fields went 9-1, also in sabre. Senior foilist Axel Kiefer went 7-1 in three matches.
