IRISH CONFERENCE CHALLENGE CONTINUES WITH NO. 17/16 NC STATE AT HOME

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (11-6, 1-3 ACC) continues its tough opening conference stretch wtih No. 17/16 NC State (14-3, 2-2) on Raycom Sports Saturday afternoon.

The Irish are in the midst of a stretch of eight Atlantic Coast Conference games that feature five ranked teams – including three contests against top-10 ranked opponents.

INJURY UPDATES

Notre Dame will never be back to ‘full strength’ this season, as senior Rex Pflueger (ACL) and freshman Robby Carmody (Torn Labrum) are out for the season, but after the six-player victory over Boston College on January 12 – the Irish should be back to eight healthy scholarship players available against NC State.

  • Juwan Durham – Sidelined for the Boston College game after an ankle injury suffered against Virginia Tech (1/1/19) was aggravated against Syracuse (1/5/19), Durham returned to action against North Carolina (1/15/19) and will play against NC State.
  • T.J. Gibbs – Struck by a sudden dose of the flu just 20 minutes before tip off against Boston College (1/12/15), Gibbs is working his way back to game shape after a few days of fluid loss. He played 35 minutes at North Carolina (1/15/19) but was not fully recovered from his illness. Is expected to be back to full strength on Saturday against NC State.
  • John Mooney – On his final field goal against Boston College (1/12/15), Mooney came down on a defender’s foot and rolled his ankle. The injury kept him out of practice until game day at North Carolina (1/15/19), but the junior captain overcame the injury to earn his ninth double-double of the year with 16 points and 19 rebounds against the Tar Heels.

MR. MOONEY ONE OF FIVE MAJOR CONFERENCE PLAYERS AVERAGING A DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Junior forward John Mooney (dubbed Mr. Mooney by Notre Dame Basketball Radio Network Analyst Zach Hillesland) posted a monster 16-point, 19-rebound effort at No. 13/15 North Carolina on Tuesday night which vaulted him into avearaging a double-double this season (13.7 ppg, 10.4 rpg).

Mooney joins Minnesota’s Jordan Murphy (14.4 pts, 11.6 reb), Kansas’ Dedric Lawson (19.2 pts, 10.6 reb), Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ (19.4 pts, 10.4 reb), and North Carolina’s Luke Maye (14.4 pts, 10.1 reb) as the only major conference players averaging a double-double in 2018-19.

  • Add in Mooney’s .542 field-goal percentage and the list of players averaging double-doubles and shooting over .540 from the field is trimmed to just Mooney and Happ.
  • Add in Mooney’s .459 three-point field goal percenage – and he becomes the only major conference player to average over 10 points, 10 rebounds, .540 FG% and .400 3FG% (minimum of 30 attempts).

MOONEY LEADS ACC IN DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Junior forward John Mooney has raised his level of play to an all-conference level in 2018-19 and currently leads the ACC in rebounding (10.4 per game) and in double-doubles (nine in 17 games played).

One of five major conference players averaging a double-double this season (13.7 ppg, 10.4 rpg), Mooney entered the season with 4.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg averages.

MOONEY’S 19-REBOUNDS IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

John Mooney’s career-high 19 rebounds at No. 13/15 North Carolina on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, is tied for the fifth-most of the Mike Brey era at Notre Dame. A further breakdown of Mooney’s big game:

  • It is the most since Zach Auguste pulled down 22 rebounds in an overtime victory over Duke in the 2016 ACC tournament (3/10/16).
  • It is the most in a non-overtime game since Luke Harangody had 22 rebounds in a loss to Washington State in the 2008 NCAA tournament (3-22-08).
  • It is the most in a regular-season game since Torin Francis grabbed 20 rebounds against Bucknell in 2002 (11/22/02).
  • It is the most in a regular-season conference game since Ryan Humphrey (current Irish assistant coach) put up 19 rebounds at Rutgers on Feb. 14, 2002.
  • His 16 defensive rebounds mark the most by a Roy Williams-coached North Carolina team, besting Iowa State’s Jard Homan’s 15 in the 2088 NCAA tournament.
  • His 19 rebounds matched the most by an opposing player in UNC’s Smith Center (done twice in 2011 and 1989).
