#9 Irish Edged By Minnesota, 2-1

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame hockey team fell to the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, 2-1, Saturday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena (4,450) on a Brannon McManus goal late in the third period.

The Fighting Irish (12-8-1, 5-6-0-0 B1G) and Golden Gophers (9-8-4, 6-3-3-0 B1G) will close the regular season series against each other on Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23 at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Jack Jenkins opened the scoring at 7:49 of the first period, giving the Irish a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Minnesota evened the score, 1-1, at 10:47 into the second stanza with a power-play marker after the Irish were called for too many men on the ice.

The score remained even after 40 minutes with both teams having registered 20 shots on goal through two periods.

The teams traded chances in the final frame before the Gophers netted the game-winner on an odd man rush with just eight seconds left in regulation.

The Irish outshot Minnesota 35 to 26.

Sophomore goaltender Dylan St. Cyr stopped 24 of 26 shots in net for the Irish while Minnesota’s Mat Robson finished with 34 saves.

The Irish went 0-for-2 on the power play while the Gophers went 1-for-5 on the man advantage.

Notre Dame hits the road next weekend for a two-game series versus Wisconsin. Game one will be played at 9 p.m. ET on Friday, Jan. 18 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin. The series will then shift to the United Center in Chicago for a 7:30 p.m. ET game on Sunday, Jan. 20 (tickets). Game one will be televised on ESPNU, while game two will broadcast by the Big Ten Network.

Notre Dame Goal Descriptions
1-0 ND | Jack Jenkins gave the Irish a 1-0 lead at 7:29 of the first period when the puck deflected off his arm and through the legs of Robson. Cal Burke’s initial shot from the right point also deflected off of Dylan Malmquist before it hit Jenkins and entered the back of the net.

Coach Jackson’s Thoughts
“I thought overall, [Dylan] played well. He does a great job handling the puck which really helps our defensemen in a lot of ways but he played a solid game. He didn’t have as many shots as they had last night but he made some good saves for us and it’s a tough break to lose a game like that.”

“Right now it’s about us trying to find ways to score goals and then try to play good defense. This team is a good team and we’ll find a way to get back on track.”

Notes

  • Junior captain Andrew Peeke skated in his 100th career game for the Irish

  • Cal Burke has collected an assist in five of his last seven games and he has recorded a point in eight of his last 10 games (3-5–8)
  • Notre Dame is 3-3-0 against Minnesota as a Big Ten opponent
