#5/6 Irish Drop 9-1 Decision at #9 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ninth-ranked Penn State posted a 9-1 win over No. 5/6 Notre Dame on Saturday night at the Pegula Ice Arena as the teams split their weekend Big Ten series.
 
The loss snapped Notre Dame’s seven-game winning streak and the Irish enter the semester break with an 11-5-1 record (5-3-0-0 B1G).
 
Alex Limoges led the Nittany Lions (11-5-1, 3-4-1-1 B1G) with two goals and two assists.
 
Cam Morrison staked the Irish to a 1-0 lead just over three and a half minutes into the first period when he tapped in a Cal Burke pass at the far post for an early Irish lead.
 
But Alex Limoges answered with back-to-back goals, including a shorthanded tally, and Kevin Kerr added his first of the year late in the period for a 3-1 Penn State lead after 20 minutes of play.
 
The second period saw the Nittany Lions add three goals, including power-play goals by Sam Sternschein and Chase Berger.
 
Penn State netted four goals in the final frame to bring the final to 9-1.
 
Goaltending
Cale Morris stopped 15 shots in goal for the Irish before Dylan St. Cy made 19 saves in relief. Peyton Jones finished with 26 saves for the Nittany Lions.
 
Special Teams
The Irish went 0-for-3 on the power play while Penn State finished 3-for-4 on the man advantage and scored a shorthanded goal.
 
Up Next
The Irish will break for finals and then return to play with one last non-conference game, playing host to Boston College at 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31.
 
Following the game against the Eagles, Notre Dame will turn its attention to a Jan. 5 showdown with Michigan outdoors at Notre Dame Stadium (see note below).

  • With a goal, Cam Morrison moved his point streak to five games (4-3-7) and he has a four-game goal scoring streak.
  • With an assist, Cal Burke pushed his point streak to six games (3-3-6) and he has nine points (4-5-9) over the last eight games.
  • Notre Dame is now 6-2-0 in true road games this season and 7-2-1 away from the Compton Family Ice Arena.
  • Over the last two seasons, the Irish are 17-4-1 in road contests (21-6-2 over the past two seasons in road and neutral site games combined).
  • In a season plus now of Big Ten conference road games, Notre Dame is 13-4-1 (9-2-1 in 2017-18).
  • Notre Dame is now 5-1-1 against Penn State since joining the Big Ten and 9-3-3 overall.
