Berneski Named First Team All-South Region By USC

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — University of Notre Dame men’s soccer team captain and center back Patrick Berneski has been named to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First Team on Wednesday.

The Irish have now placed 10 players on the first team in the last seven seasons. The most recent recipient prior to this season was Jon Gallagher who earned the honor in 2017.

Berneski started and played the entirety of all 21 matches during the 2018 campaign. Despite playing as a defender, the skipper tied for the team lead in goals with six on the season. The graduate student was lethal on set pieces, scoring all six goals from corners or free kicks. Five of Berneski’s six goals came from headers.

As good as Berneski was in front of goal, he was even better on defense. The Warrington, Pennsylvania, native anchored the back line, helping the Irish record nine clean sheets. Notre Dame also held opponents to one or no goals in 17 of 21 matches this season. The Irish allowed a first half goal in just one match this season and never trailed at the half.

Berneski and the Irish finished the season with an 11-7-3 record and made a run to the quarterfinals in the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2013. The center back also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District status along with All-ACC Second Team.
