IRISH CONTINUE ROAD SWING IN INDIANAPOLIS AGAINST PURDUE

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (6-3) continues a three-game road swing against Power 5 Conference teams this weekend when it faces Purdue (6-4) in the 2018 Crossroads Classic at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The three-game road swing caps a five-game stretch for the Irish that featured contests against teams from college basketball’s top conferences, with the Irish claiming home court wins over DePaul and Illinois before falling in close losses to Oklahoma (at Madison Square Garden) and at UCLA.

CROSSROADS CLASSIC HISTORY

The Crossroads Classic is in its eighth season featuring Notre Dame, Butler, Indiana and Purdue. The Irish and Bulldogs rotate between facing the Hoosier and Boilermakers each season. Notre Dame is 3-4 in the event and looks to break a three-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon.

Butler is 5-2 in the event, followed by Indiana (4-3), Notre Dame (3-4) and Purdue (2-5).

NOTRE DAME VERSUS PURDUE

  • The Irish and Boilermakers will be meeting for the 44th time on Saturday afternoon with Notre Dame holding a 22-21 lead in the all-time series.
  • The series dates back to 1916 and Purdue claimed the first nine victories between the two teams from 1916 through 1932. Notre Dame claimed its first win over Purdue in the Fieldhouse on December 19, 1933, and has won 22 of the most recent 34 meetings between the two schools.
  • The current Crossroads Classic event is a recreation of the Hoosier Classic, which began in the 1940s and featured Notre Dame, Indiana, Butler and Purdue. The Irish faced the Boilermakers nine times in the Hoosier Classic, posting a 7-2 record. Combined with the current Crossroads Classic, Notre Dame is 9-3 against Purdue as part of in-state one-day classic-type events.
  • After the 1966 season, the Notre Dame – Purdue series went on an extended hiatus, with the two teams not meeting until March 17, 2004, when Notre Dame defeated Purdue 71-59 in the Postseason NIT at Purcell Pavilion (Purdue’s lone visit to Purcell Pavilion).
  • Mike Brey is 2-1 against Matt Painter, with all three of those meetings occurring in the Crossroads Classic.
  • Mike Brey is 3-1 against Purdue at Notre Dame and 3-2 all-time (0-1 at Delaware).
  • Notre Dame is 276-235-1 all-time against teams from the Big Ten Conference, including 1-0 this season (vs. Illinois, Nov. 27).

MOONEY LEADS ACC IN DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Junior forward John Mooney has raised his level of play to an all-conference level in 2018-19 and currently leads the ACC in rebounding (9.7 per game) and double-doubles (five in nine games played).

Close to averaging a double-double this season (11.6 ppg, 9.7 rpg), Mooney entered the season with 4.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg averages.

DURHAM SHOT BLOCKING MAKES EARLY IMPRESSION

Even though Juwan Durham is listed as a junior on the Notre Dame roster, he is really just experiencing the first significant minutes in a series of collegiate games this season. Durham saw limited minutes in his freshman season at UConn (2016-17) after sitting out his senior year of high school to recover from an ACL tear in his right knee. He also had wrist surgery while sitting out during his transfer season last year with the Irish.

In his first game in a Notre Dame uniform against UIC (11/6/18) he became the first Notre Dame player since 2012 to block six shots in a game. Durham also sparked the Irish with 10 points and five blocks in the second half of a victory over Illinois (11/27/18) and has 22 blocks in his first eight games (has one DNP-CD this year) at Notre Dame.

During the Mike Brey era (2000-01 – present) only six other players have blocked five or more shots multiple times, putting the Tampa, Florida, native – with two full years of eligibility remaining after this season – among some notetworthy Irish players early in his career.
