Lebedev Drops First Round Of Fall Nationals

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Senior Alex Lebedev represented the University of Notre Dame and the men’s tennis team at the 2018 Oracle ITA Fall National Championships on Wednesday (November 7). Advancing to the quarterfinal round of competition at the 2018 ITA All-American Championships in October, Lebedev earned a berth in the national tournament. He entered the season ranked 19th in the Oracle ITA Preseason rankings,

Lebedev was put up against David Volfson of Cornell in the round of 64. Taking the first set 6-3, the two battled it out in the second, with Volfson taking it in another 6-3 decision to force the third set. Lebedev looked to knock out his opponent and advance to the round of 32 for the second consecutive year but ultimately lost 6-1 in the deciding set.

“All of the credit goes to Volfson for playing a hard match. He built up some momentum early in the second set and never took his foot off the gas pedal,” head coach Ryan Sachire said. “The consolation draw represents another great opportunity for Alex as this week moves along. He’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”

Lebedev, seeded 16th in the consolation draw, will take on Yancy Dennis of South Carolina in the first round of consolation.
