2018 Academic All-District

Three Notre Dame Student-Athletes Named To Academic All-District Team

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Three University of Notre Dame men’s soccer student-athletes were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District team presented by CoSIDA. Junior Jack Casey earns his second Academic All-District honor while seniors Patrick Berneski and Thomas Ueland garner the first Academic All-District honor of their careers.

Notre Dame was the only team in the ACC to place three student-athletes on 2018 Academic All-District teams.

Berneski has excelled in the attack and in defense this season, as the center back is tied for the team lead in goals with six on the season, the most of any defender in the ACC. The graduate student also anchors a back line that has recorded six clean sheets this season and has allowed just one or no goals in 14 of 18 matches in 2018. The Irish skipper has been lethal in set pieces, as all six goals have come from corners or free kicks.

Berneski completed his undergraduate degree earlier this spring and is working on an MS in Management. The center back has a GPA of 3.39 in grad school.

Casey, a 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Team selection, has played a major role in the Irish midfield this season. The junior has started 16 matches and has appeared in all 18 fixtures in 2018. Casey has registered three assists on the season, including the match-winning goal against Boston College with a perfect through ball.

The junior is double majoring in economics and political science and has a cumulative GPA of 3.96.

Ueland has made a huge impact in attack for the Irish, scoring six goals during the 2018 campaign. Ueland’s six goals are tied for the team lead. The senior finished the regular season strong, scoring four times in the last six matches. Of the six goals that Ueland has scored, two have been match winners, as strikes against Xavier and Pitt proved to be the deciding scores in the victories.

The senior is set to graduate next spring with a degree in biological sciences. Ueland has a cumulative GPA of 3.95 over his four years at Notre Dame.

The Google Cloud Academic All-District teams selected by CoSIDA recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and academically.
