Multiple Pool Records Set On First Day Of Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — In their final home meet of 2018, the Irish hosted Virginia Tech and Pitt in a series of dual meets over two days. After day one, the Irish lead the competition with scores of 122-45 (Virginia Tech) and 130-37 (Pitt) on the women’s side. The men hold a narrow margin of 87-80 over Virginia Tech heading into the second day and post a 113-54 score over Pitt. The day was highlighted by a series of bests, including multiple pool records and a sixth-best time in program history.

The first day of conference action featured 13 first-place finishes and three sweeps. The Irish took first, second and third in the men’s and women’s 100 fly, the women’s 200 back and women’s 100 free.

Marci Barta broke the previous pool record of 3:52.34 in the 400 IM, powering into the wall with a time of 3:49.75. Sinead Eksteen took the top spot in the women’s 1,000 free, touching the wall in 9:58.89 for the sixth best time in Notre Dame Swim history. Immediately after, Zach Yeadon boasted a 1,000 free time of 8:58.55, besting the previous pool record of 9:02.47 which he set during his freshman season.

Barta’s 400 IM time leads the NCAA and Yeadon posted the second fastest 1,000 free time in the country on Friday night (based on times entering the weekend).

The final day of competition begins tomorrow (Saturday, November 3) at 11 a.m. Admission is free and open to all. The second half of swimming will start with the 200 medley relay. Following a quick break, the individual races will take place starting with the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 fly, 100 back, 200 breast and 200 free as well as the men’s 3-meter and women’s 1-meter dives. The final race of the two-day event will be the 400 free relay.
